Refreshments: March 2021

A few months back IPSY started a subscription called Refreshments. This is a line of bathroom products that you could customize and use to restock your bathroom each month. Last month I received the free introductory bag that included a pack of the Makeup remover wipes and the Luscious Hand Cream in the scent Citrus Spritz.

I’ve been using both all month and I have to say i wasn’t all that impressed. The hand cream smells nice and applies well, but it isn’t anything spectacular. i have many better hand creams in my collection and will not be placing this on reorder.

Likewise the makeup removal wipes were disappointing. They are on the dry side and they aren’t the best at removing makeup. while I have more or less removed disposable wipes from my routine, if I were going to add them back in, this isn’t the brand I would choose to order. It would be convenient to have them sent to me each month, but I think I would rather have something that works a little bit better. At the moment I am sticking with my Makeup Eraser.

Neither of the items made it into this month’s cart. However each month they release a new item. I looked over their list of items and found that a razor with replaceable blades was an option. In the first pack you get the reusable handle, two sets of blades and a suction cup wall mount for the razor. Each subsequent month you just get two replacement blades. The razor is listed at $5. It remains five dollars each month. The handle and suction cup mount is considered a free gift with your first purchase. I’m glad they don’t charge for the handle but i have to laugh at it considered a free gift. what are you going to do with the blades without a handle?

When I received my Refreshments package this month, I was pleasantly surprised. After the first two Refreshments products I recieved, I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much. The handle is metal and quite sturdy looking. It has some heft to it but it isn’t very heavy and it has sort of rubberized nubbies on it to aid with grip in wet situations, like showers.

With tax the monthly set of razors comes to $5.95. There is no shipping fee as it is just sent with the subscription box. As many of you may know, I have been trying out several shaving subscriptions over the past year. Some have been better than others. one thing i have found out is that I prefer metal handles with rubberized grips that don’t slip and that I generally go through two sets of blades each month. Which, it I like the shave I get, sort of makes this an ideal subscription for me.

The trick is of course, the shave.

I’ll have to get back to you on that. At the moment I do like that the subscription is completely customizable. The items are supposed to arrive mid month (which this one did) and you can sign up for the frequency on the IPSY page under the Refreshments tab. There you can decided how often you want each item sent to you. You can choose any items on the list you want and the cost of each is clearly marked beside the item so that you know exactly how much you will be charged. Any changes you make have to be done before the end of the month because like the other IPSY subscriptions it charges to your account on the first of the month.

For now I am happy to give this razor a try and if I like it to leave the blades on continuous restock. Before next month I will have to see how I feel about the other items on offer. Perhaps I will add them or perhaps i will just stick with my razor blades. I’ll let you know what I end up deciding.

Refreshments Unboxing

My first Refreshments Bag

A few months ago IPSY started a side subscription called Refreshments. The Refreshments bag is designed to ship your bathroom essentials to you every month.  The bag ships with your Glam Bag, this reducing shipping costs.  The first bag was free so I signed up for it.  The price varies based on what you order from their listed items.  You can sign up to receive the same items each month or vary it based on your needs. You can even skip it that month entirely if you are well stocked on product. I actually really like the flexibility of the system.

The first complementary bag came with face wipes and hand cream.  It has been at least three years since I have bought face wipes.  While I really like having them on hand and I really like using them, I don’t like the waste of them so I weened myself off of them .

Since I couldn’t alter the items in the first free bag, I now have a set of facial wipes.  I will use them, but I have already logged into my Refreshments account and taken them off my recurring purchases list.  So I have just this set and no more.

That being said, the wipes are clean smelling with very little scent attached to them.  I used one of them to remove the lipstick swatch from the About Face liquid lipstick. It is a very dark color so I figured it was a pretty good test.

It worked tolerably well.  It left a little pink behind on the skin of my hand and I did have to rub quite hard to get the lipstick off.  I think with regular makeup it will be fine.  It just wasn’t happy about the dark color.

The wipes are not dripping with liquid which was nice.  They were slightly on the dry side which leads me to believe they won’t last a long time.  Are they the best wipes I’ve used?  No, but I wouldn’t be ordering them even if they were.

Knowing I have used better wipes just means there will be no regret for not receiving them again.  I will say that I had a lot of regret when I used my last AYAM Dead Sea Minerals with Vitamin C infused Makeup remover wipes. They were amazing and it felt like an actual sacrifice not to order a new pack as soon as the last one ran out.

The second item in my free bag was the Luscious Hand Cream in the scent Citrus Spritz. It has a nice scent to it and is thick enough to ward off chapped hands after excess washing and sanitizing.  I really like this cream.  I’m not entirely certain I need a new tube of it every month, but it is a nice cream and I will use it.

The two items came in a satin like draw string bag, similar to the Ipsy Glam Bag Plus, although to be honest, it is of better quality than last months’ drawstring bag for the Plus subscription tier.  It will go into the drawer with the others and when next I travel it will be used for either underwear or jewelry.

With this tier the products are supposed to arrive by the middle of the month and you have the opportunity to change things around as long as you do it before the end of the month. Each month they are adding new items.  They started small and are slowly increasing the number of products.

Next month, I am signed up to receive a razor from them. The first razor comes with two sets of blades and a handle and subsequent razor purchases just have the two pack of blades to go with the reusable handle.  As the blades each month are $5 and two sets of blades are pretty much what I go through each month, if this works out, it will be the cheapest shaving subscription I’ve tried and the easiest to refill as it would just come tucked into my Ipsy Box.  So I have my fingers crossed. I’m sure at some point I will try some of their other products as well.

I won’t be ordering the Cleansing wipes, but I will probably pick up another tube of the Luscious Hand cream as I really like the scent and the formula.  It like the other products, have a decent price as well with every item available thus far ranging from $5 – $11. This could be a very nice subscription in the long run.  To be honest, if the razors work out, it may end my shaving subscription quest, regardless of any other products. Over all, I am glad I looked into the Refreshments subscription.
