Lovely lips from The Balm

I have used various products from The Balm for years. I really enjoy their shadows, I am okay with their blushes although they aren’t my favorite and I adore their Bahama Mama Bronzer. For years it was my go to bronzer. But I have to confess, as much as I love lip products, I had never gotten around to trying out their lip products.

It was an oversight.

bare lips

In the August Look Fantastic Box thee was a Meet Matte Hughes Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick from The Balm in the box. It is in the shade Honest, which if I am being honest, is a bit to pinky-coral for me. However it did give me a chance to try the formula.

Opening the tube there is a distinct scent of peppermint. I will never complain about the scent of peppermint. I really enjoy it. However I usually associate it with plumping glosses. I checked, this is a matte lipstick, not a plumper. which is fine. I love liquid lips in general so the peppermint is just a bonus.

lipstick. (also this foundation settles into lines so please ignore that)

The application wand is a doe foot style but it is slightly angled for better application. Application itself was smooth and easy. I was somewhat relived to find the color was not as bright a coral as I feared. I applied and then blotted. Blotting is habit after lippie application for me. I actually have to remind myself not to do it after clear lip gloss.

I think the blot made the liquid lip dry down a little faster than it might have done other wise but removing any excess. the lippie did dry down relatively quickly which I found nice. It didn’t leave a lot of lip prints around, but I did notice that it did fade throughout the day. There was certainly a reduction in pigmentation towards the end of the day and in fact it was mostly gone at the end of the day. If worn when out and about I would probably reapply after lunch. As it was after lunch that I noticed it was mostly gone. I do think that part of that might be due to the shade. As it faded it more or less started to match the pink of my lips. I would actually like to test the long wear aspect with a darker color.

It is however a very comfortable to wear formula and even though this is not my shade I did enjoy the formula and would certainly look into picking up more of the Meet Matte Hughes Longwear liquid Lipstick in the future.

Why Hello Thailor

This Kim Chi Chic Beauty Thailor Bronzer (shade I went to Venice) is the second makeup item that I have tried from the Kim Chi Beauty Brand. The First is the puff Puff Pass Setting powder and that I absolutely love. The powder is nice and the powder puff that comes with it fantastic.

This Thailor bronzer comes in a plastic heart. While it is cute, I wish it were a little less puffy of a heart as it does take up a little more space. But that is a minor complaint. The magnet on the package is really strong so I don’t worry about it accidentally coming open. And the mirror is a good usable size inside the heart shaped compact.

There are eight different shades. I am actually quite pleased with this one actually. It is a soft buttery formula in the pan. It did have an impression on the product, but use has already worn it away. Because of the soft formula, I expect it will be one of those products that does get used up pretty easily. I still think it will last a while, because there is a lot of it, but I think the wear will be noticeable because it is a soft formula.

completely bare cheek

which I don’t actually mind. I would much rather have a good product that I can use up than a product that I keep long enough to go bad in the case.

It is highly pigmented. One quick swipe through the powder was all that I needed to do in order to collect enough product on the brush (because it is such a soft formula you do not need to press down to gather, just swipe across the top. – there may be an over spray that wears off on the first use or two as it gets much more pigmented after the first couple of uses.)

just foundation and bronzer

I found myself using a light hand when i applied the bronzer because it is very easy to get a deep streak with this product. I know some people really like the dramatic contour line. Personally I like a more natural look in my day to day life. I do like the bronzer to make my cheekbones look a little more prominent and by extension less rounded by fat.

What I really liked about this formula was that it is very bendable. if you find yourself putting up a dark line that is a little too harsh on your face, it is easy to soften the edges and blend it out.

However this bendability does come with the soft formula and that soft formula is probably also the reason that this tends to fade out a little bit towards the end of the ay. As I tend to go soft and subtle with my bronzer, it is not as noticeable a fade.

If you are going for a dramatic look, the drama may fade a bit after about five hours. So plan accordinly.

Personally I really like this bronzer. Because I do lean into subtle, I use less product, One swipe of the brush is all i need for each cheek. I love the bendability. I also sort of like the restraint of having to start with a light touch. It helps me get my cheeks even. I go in lightly with the brush to make sur they are where I want them to be and then I used the same brush to darken with the product still on the brush. and then I blend. It works for me, as does this Thailor Bronzer by Kim Chi Chic Beauty. I would 100% purchase this again.

The Daily: September 7th, 2022

Once again the rain is falling. But at least the temperatures are going down. My garden doesn’t quite know what is going on. Some of the plants didn’t flower this summer because it got too hot too quickly. Now they are flowering. I have an entire melon vine now covered with little yellow flowers and three small bulges indicating melons might be on the way. All summer long the vine grew and i watered it to keep it healthy, but no flowers.

I suspect October might be the month of cantaloupe this year.

Other than that today has been a day spent at the desk. I am still trying to clear out a lot of projects, but the work load is manageable at this point. I suspect that once i return I will have found several things that have fallen through the cracks. But I suppose that is more or less inevitable.

Today, perhaps because of the rain and the temperature drop, perhaps because I reached for a fall-ish toned lipstick, I was feeling autumn in my bones. I set the summer scented candles aside and dug out one of the few left over from last year and decided to light it. the house now smells of warming spiced like cardamom and cinnamon. the cooler temperatures are only in the 80s so it might be a bit over reaching, but it makes me happy and that is what counts.

And I’ll admit, part of my wishing fall would arrive is that I am very ready for this year to be over with. It has been a brutal year on so many levels and I am just so ready to put it all behind me. I really want the clean slate of a new year. I know I have far too much to get done before then, but it doesn’t stop me wanting it, hence the candle. And the searching of my favorite candle sites this weekend to see if any autumnal scents have been released. I know I can’t be the only one ready to move forward.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Milk Makeup Hydrogrip Primer

Foundation: Covergirl Aquasmooth foundation

Bronzer: Trestique Bronzing Stick

Blush: Illamasqua Gel Blusher

Eyeshadow: Colourpop Blowin Smoke

Eyebrows: iMethod eyebrow Stencil Kit

Mascara: Milk Makeup Rise Mascara

Lipstick: NARS Lipstick in Kirat

A lot of today’s makeup was dictated by the Covergirl foundation. It is a cream based foundation that not only applies better with a sponge, but really doesn’t like dealing with brushes. all brushes leave tracks on it so I used cream face products today. Actually I chose two of my favorites, the trestique bronzing stick and the Illamasqua gel blusher. Both i blended with my fingers because it was easiest.

The trestique was a little dark with this foundation and I should have gone in with a lighter touch, but it worked out okay in the end. This foundation is a light coverage foundation. There is a definite limit to it’s buildability. I went with the Milk Makeup Hydrogrip primer today because I really like the primer and because it is very gripping. And that is kind of what this foundation needs. I don’t know if it is because of the sunscreen in it or maybe the type of sunscreen in it, but this foundation had issues settling down yesterday. It kept wanting to move as I applied other things. With the hydrogrip underneath it worked so much better. It locked in place and I didn’t need the setting powder to keep it there, which made the look a little lighter.

I have to say i love the Blowin Smoke Palette. There is something about the grays and blacks that just appeal to me. I also have to say that this palette did inspire me to go ahead and order the Lime Crime Immortals palette. I’ve been eyeing it for a while and while it does have similar tones, it does had a little color to it. And as much as I love this palette, I kind of wanted one of the grays to have more of a purple undertone. It has a slight one but I just want to nudge it a little bit more. I suspect i will reach for this palette when i want a specific look because of the monochrome nature of it. however I am very glad I did purchase this because it is worth having in my collection. I also want to see how it compares with the Lime Crime but that will come later. either way this palette will be staying well after it’s testing phase.

And then we have the lips. This is a Nars Lip and I really love the formula. It is a traditional bullet lipstick, which after the mess of yesterdays liquid lip was somewhat reassuring. While I think this color is now discontinued, this is the third tube of this color I have owned. For a really long time this was my go to lip. i would wear a clear gloss to the office and then reach for this once the work day was done. I like the creamy formula of the nars lipstick and I love the pigmentation. It is something i always forget but need to remember. I really need to spend some time on the NARS website looking at lipsticks. But i always like reaching for this and the darker shadow palette gave me the excuse to do so. And yes I will be using it to reach for my darker lipsticks. I like the neutrals but I really move my deep shades.

And so that is me. And now it is back to work. It was a nice break but now I must return to paperwork and dreams of cool autumnal winds.

The Daily: September 6th, 2022

Good afternoon my darlings. I hope you had a fantastic weekend. Personally I really enjoyed the three day weekend. While the rain kept me from doing much in the way of garden chores, I did get several very necessary things done in the house. Which was nice. I also took a little time and just sort of rested. I think I have been running a 100 miles a minute for the last few weeks so having a little time to just sort of take a breather was probably the best thing for me.

Sometimes, even when your plate is full, taking a few minutes of down time is the best thing you can do for your mental health. I always forget that until I take the down time and then i always remind myself to remember after I’ve taken the time. I need to figure out a better system, but hopefully the reminder will help you.

Speaking of reminders, I did something fun and fabulous this weekend. I pre ordered my Look Fantastic Advent Calendar. I know, it is September. The pre release list was just opened. They won’t ship until closer to the Holiday season. Unlike the people at the grocery store near me who already have a display of Santas and other Christmas themed décor items up for sale. (Seriously, they skipped both Halloween and Thanksgiving and went straight to Christmas in the final week of August. I am actually amazed at how offended by that I actually am. After all I haven’t even gotten out my Frankenstein Coffee mug.

the pre order I don’t mind though. Especially since the last three years they have sold out before I could purchase them. I have been trying to snag the Look Fantastic Advent Calendar for a while and just missing out. So the pre order went in. And then there was a Happy Dance. It was also nice to just feel like something went right for a moment. Even if it was something small. And even though I do put up an advent calendar post listing out all of the ones I think are worth purchasing, I generally limit the number of advent calendars I actually purchase. while cost is definitely a factor, I really like it to feel special and opening one or two nice ones instead of a bunch does keep them feeling special. There are always far more advent calendars that I want than I can realistically buy anyway, hence the post. I’ll still get a couple for family as gifts, but limit the number for myself.

Anyway that is the long winded way of saying that I managed to pre order the Look Fantastic Advent Calendar for 2022 and that they are now available for pre-order if you would like them. I am now avoiding any spoilers for the Look Fantastic Advent Calendar since I would like to forget what little I do know about it and treat it as a surprise. So with that said, let’s jump into today’s look shall we. I decided to take a little break from the neutral norm.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Elf Poreless Putty Primer

Foundation: Cover Girl Aqua Smooth Makeup + Titanium Dioxide Sunscreen

Setting Powder: Kim Chi Chic Beauty Puff Puff Pass Setting Powder

Bronzer: Buxom Staycation Vibes Bronzer

Blush: bareMinerals Bounce and Blur Blush

Eyeshadow: Colourpop Blowin’ Smoke palette

Brows: iMethod Beauty Stencils with the ABH Dip Brow Pomade

Mascara: Milk Makeup Rise Mascara

Lips: Stila Stay All Day Lip in Rubino

I know usually I start with the base work my way out and then go from eyes down landing on the lips but today we need to start with the lips. Oh my do we need to start with the lips. I ordered the Blowin’ Smoke Palette from Colourpop and it arrived over the weekend. It was on sale (still is actually if you follow the link above). I’;ve wanted the palette for a while now, but always talked myself out of it. I think I was just wanting something more than the rosy tones and neutrals that I have been going for later and I have to say this was fun to play with. But that we will get to in a minute. The point is that once I put the eye makeup on a neutral lip didn’t look right.

While I have bee wearing more neutral lips a lot lately I love a good deep lip color. This Stila liquid lip is one that I always swatch when I think about decluttering my lips and then decide I just love the shade so much I can’t part with it and remind myself to wear it more often. So I went for it today. It is a messy liquid lip. It needs a lip liner to keep it from bleeding into the fine lines. It is also strange when drying down. It takes a while to dry down on the lips, but it sort of stains. So once you put it on your lips that is where it is staying. Which is why if you zoom in my lips are messy and crooked. This formula doesn’t dry down all the way and leaves lip prints everywhere. it also stains your lips and if you smear it it stains around your lips too. I am going to have to go in with a lip scrub tonight. I do love the color but have just such problems with the formula. The wand put too much product on the lips and then when i blotted, it smeared and touch ups were kind of a pain. I need to find this color in a different formula and just mark this tube as kept for color match not for wearing.

the foundation was a new one for me as well today. I saw this when i ducked into a drugstore over the weekend and couldn’t resist. It is really interesting. It has to be applied with a makeup sponge. You will get no where with a foundation brush and this product and actually using brushes afterwards will leave lines. It applied beautifully with a sponge. With the sunscreen in the formula though, it is a bit on the oily side. It was fine once I set it with the setting powder but it is a foundation that needs setting powder over it.

Also it doesn’t like brushes. At all. I use the Kim Chi powder today because it came with a powder puff. When I applied the bronzer I used a brush and then had to tidy up with a makeup sponge which I have never had to do with the Buxom Bronzer. I had a different blush out but went with the bareMinerals because it was a creamier formula applied with the fingertips. That worked better. I think this is just a foundation that needs cream products on top of it. I liked the way it looked so I have no problems playing with it to see what works, but any brush will leave tracks t seems.

I think I will try cream products tomorrow to see how it works out.

The Colourpop palette was fantastic. The brushes had to be tapped off because it was a bit powdery. But I think that part of that is because of the darker tones. This is a fun palette. It is full of grays and black tones with silvers. It is a really nice break from my regular palettes and I am really glad that i picked it up. I enjoyed using it today and I will enjoy using it the rest of the week. It makes a really nice break from the red tones and neutrals. The gray and black blended well and that silver was just absolutely fantastic. It will be interesting to see how long I find the palette interesting as it is fairly monochromatic and could get boring. At the moment I am loving it and I think it will be a really good addition to my collection.

The Rise Mascare from Milk Makeup remains super fabulous and I can already feel the tube starting to make the empty sound so soon it will be no more and I will need to purchase a full size.

If you have been following these posts for any length of time you will know I have fallen in love with the iMethod stencils for brows. Mostly because it is the first time my brows have actually looked like each other. Sometimes they are sort of related when I do them with out a stencil, sometimes they aren’t even in the same gene pool. So this has been fantastic for me. It feels a bit like cheating but i don’t care. However I do have several other brow pomades. And since the pomade from iMethod is running low I thought I would rotate the pomades with the stencil and tool and see how it worked. I went with the ABH Dip Brow today. it works fine with a brush, not so fine with the stencil. It is far too dark with the stencil. the formula worked well, which is nice to know, but the color is just off. I would need to get this in a formula several shades lighter to look right. But I like the fact that I can use it with the stencils.

And that my darlings is me today. A little bit different from the typical but I think I like it. I will probably be rotating through my darker lip shades but this is actually helping me decide which ones I need to let go. I love the Stila color. If I get a lip liner that can corral it I might be able to make it work, otherwise the formula is just too messy. Which is also good to know.

And so it is back to work for me now. Have a great rest of the day and I’ll see you back here tomorrow to share what is going on in my world. Until then.

The Daily: September 1st, 2022

Good afternoon my darlings. Today I am happy to report that it has been relatively quiet. I took advantage of the quiet to make some tomato sauce actually. We have had a load of tomatoes finally come in from the garden. It is strange to say as usually June and July are the months where the garden overwhelms us with tomatoes. This year i think it was too hot for them.

They fruited late so we just started getting ripe tomatoes a week or two ago. Now each day brings a new handful. I am roasting them in the oven with some basil and olive oil. Once they are roasted, I’ll use the stick blender on them and then slowly let them thicken on the stove for the rest of the day.

It’s one of those super easy things to do if you are going to be around the house for the day. Since I am working, and it is too hot to walk, I figured I would use this as part of a break from the desk. Plus there is something I find very comfortable about the scent of roasting tomatoes and basil. It has filled up the house and is just a fabulously comforting scent.

And as you know, scents are non-caloric. So I get all of the delightful scents with none of the calories. The calories will come with later meals of course, but at least I know that it is a good sauce with no bad things in it. Plus it is tweaked for my tastes. I’ve also got garlic roasting to add to it later, so that adds to the fantastic scents in the house. Very few things smell as good as roasting garlic in my opinion.

Today’s Look

Foundation: O/S Turn up the Base Powder Foundation

Bronzer/Blush/highlight/powder: Pur 4-in-1 Perfecting Powders Palette

Eyeshadow: Lawless Beauty The One Baby Eyeshadow Palette

Mascara: Milk Makeup Rise Mascara

Lips: Lawless Beauty Forget the Filler Lip Plumping gloss

Today was interesting makeup wise. It is my first use of the O/S Powder foundation so I skipped the primer to see how it performed on it’s own. while I love how it applied, the pores darling, the pores. I need a primer under this. It is beautifully sheer, which covers well but without the primer more or less enhances the pores. But I did want to try it on it’s own and I am glad I did. I really like it, I think I will just like it a lot more when I have a porefilling primer underneath.

I went for the Pur palette because it was out and I thought it would work well with the light coverage of the foundation. I had to work to tone down the bronzer but I think it ended up being okay. It isn’t a stellar combination, but it did work.

this was also the first use of the Lawless eyeshadow Palette. The shades I used blended really well. They are powdery so I tapped the brush off before applying and that seemed to be enough. I liked the first use and am looking forward to trying it out further.

The mattes blended well together. they didn’t blend so well with the shimmer though

The Rise mascara is fantastic. I will so be picking this up in the full size. It is both lengthening and lifting. And I like the curl in the wand as well. Unfortunately my tube is small and already almost empty. I will use it until it is gone, mostly because it is a small enough sample size that I don’t think it is worth putting in the drawer again for later use. I will be ordering a full size though. I’m also planning a mascara declutter soon since most of the ones I have open are at the end of their lives. but that is for later.

To finish things up today I went with the Lawless Forget the filler lip plumper. It isn’t fantastically plumping, but it is a great gloss and I do like the feel of the formula on my lips. It has the tingle of a plumper, but that’s about it.

And so my darlings that was me today. it was actually a quick and easy look. I am missing my primer, but over all, I am pretty happy with how things turned out.

Trying out the Bellapierre Peach Blossom Palette

Normally I will give an eyeshadow Palette longer than a week’s worth of use before I review it. However this Peach Blossom Palette from Bellapierre is a four pan palette and I feel that a week was long enough.

As you can see from the picture, it is a four pan palette, unsurprisingly in peach tones. It features one matte shade (the peachy shade on the far left named Dahlia. The others are all shimmers. Glisten is the silvery/whitish shade, Hawaii is the peach-ish shimmer and Copper Mine is the (you guessed it) coppery shade on the far right.

I’ll be honest. I didn’t think I would like this palette at all. I thought maybe i would get some use out of the coppery shade as, let’s face it, I love copper shadows. I simply don’t really like peach tones. On me they are either too orange and make me look vaguely jaundiced or they will be too pinkish and make me look a little fevered. Sometimes they will go for a darker peach that actually blends in so well with my eye lids that it doesn’t even seem to be there.

But as many products from Bellapierre as I have tried, I have never tried their eyeshadow so I decided to give them a go. And I am glad I did. The swatch of Dahlia was not encouraging though. It turned out way brighter than I wanted to wear. But as I was also testing out a lipstick that was way brighter than I usually wear, I soldiered on. I figured at the very least they would look like they belonged together.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that when applied to the lid the eyeshadow I thought was going to a bright toxic looking coral turned out to be a rather subdued pinkish tone that worked as a an excellent summer shade for a low key look. In fact it made me change my face products this week. I started out wearing an actual foundation, but the shadow worked better for a more natural look and I shifted to tinted moisturizers.

It was not at all what I was expecting. The one matte of Dahlia didn’t really blend well with the shimmers, but it was easy to layer shimmers over it. Which is nice as all I have in this palette are shimmers. And for it’s pale application, it did last throughout the day. There was some fading but the shadow never truly disappeared. I did have to tap the brush off so no loose powder ended up on my nose but over all it was a surprisingly pleasant shadow to work with.

the coral shade turned out to be much more subtle than I expected and was a nice soft shadow to wear on a low makeup day

The shimmers applied well also. they layered over the matte but weren’t really keen on blending. You could almost always see a line where one stopped and the other began.

The one matte worked well with all three of the shimmers. I will say I didn’t really care for the shade Hawaii. It had the coral undertones that I feared in Dahlia. Which is more about me and colors than the shadows. I did like that the coppery shade had reddish pink undertones that paired really well with Dahlia as well. The shadows were chosen well and for what it is, this is a nice palette. I could easily see slipping this into an overnight bag to use for a quick trip. With only one matte I think it would get boring after a while. But for an overnight trip or a weekend adventure this is perfect. It is a slim palette with a hard case that would travel well. Just make sure everything goes with the pinkish tones and you will be set.

Will I be reaching for this often, probably not. i can’t see it being my go-to palette. That is simply because even though I was pleasantly surprised, these still really aren’t toes I reach for all the time. I am happy to have it as I think that on occasion I will use it when I am in the mood for the shades. Even more I am pleased to have tried out some of Bellapierre’s shadows. It is a formula I like. It is soft and not too powdery. It is not as pigmented as I expected but did give good color. They don’t build very well. That is it’s main downfall. You aren’t going to get deep tones, at least not from the shadows in this palette. Do I think that it is worth the $25 it retails for? No. I think that is a bit overpriced for what it is. However, it is a formula of eyeshadow i would not mind experimenting with more in the future. And for me, that is well worth knowing.

The Daily: August 31st, 2022

Oh yes my darlings, today I actually sat down with makeup. I also had a long and very detailed conversation with my mother about bionic hands. She has two options she is trying to choose between. One is an 8-12 hour surgery that might or might not get all of the cancer. It involves a bone graft with a bone taken from her leg along with tendons and a skin graft from her thigh. In addition to possibly not getting all of the cancer, given her age there is a possibility the bone won’t graft. which means potential future surgeries on her hand , a return of the cancer and possible permanent damage to her leg.

The other option is amputation.

She was worried about becoming Captain Hook. However she loves the bionic hands and because of them she is now considering amputation. she is still contemplating buying the pirate hat with the large feather adornment, she just won’t have the old fashioned steel hook to go with it. She needed to talk it through with someone so we spent two hours discussing things and looking up websites. She hasn’t made her final choice yet but she felt better for having someone to talk it out with. Her doctors are all very careful to lay out all of the options and make an effort to not influence her in any way, which is good and I know she appreciates but it leads to very careful responses to her questions. The careful responses answer her questions but leave her somewhat unsatisfied so I was a sounding wall while she figured it out.

Which I don’t mind.

After the conversation I had the mental release of putting on my makeup for the day, which was a nice break from heavy duty thinking. I also went for easy options that didn’t take a lot of time. Let’s get into that now then shall we? Lighten things up a bit.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Tatcha Liquid Silk Canvas Primer

Foundation: NYX Bare With Me Tinted Skin Veil

Bronzer/Blush/highlight/powder: Pur Cosmetics 4-in-1 Perfecting Powders Face palette

Eyeshadow: Bellapierre Cosmetics Peach Blossom Palette

Mascara: Milk Makeup Rise Mascara

Lips: Meet Matte Hughes The Balm Liquid Lipstick in Honest

Today I did choose products that were quick and easy. While I like the Liquid Silk Canvas primer from Tatcha, I think I do prefer the formula of the balm version better. I really like both, but to be honest I can’t really afford to buy both at the same time. So while I wouldn’t mind keeping both around, I think that when I do reorder i will be getting a full size of the Balm version of this primer and maybe another travel size of the liquid version to have on hand. It is good, it is quick and it works as well as the other version, I just have a formula preference.

Today I wanted a light foundation product and with my recent expired product debacle I wanted to make sure nothing else was. This NYX was not expired. In fact I hadn’t opened it yet. I used up the last one and repurchased but hadn’t gotten around to using it yet. I always forget how much I like this until I use it. The bare with me blends out well and gives a great light coverage for the day.

This Pur palette is easy to grab and I am trying to decide if I want to take it with me as my travel palette when I head down to my Mom’s or if I want separate products. So I don’t mind using it, plus it is quick and easy.

I am still trying out the bellapierre palette. The shadow formula is nice but with only one matte shade it does get repetitive. The matte is a bit powdery. You can see a little peach dust on my nose. (I took care of it post photo but I wanted to show it) But over all it isn’t bad. With one matte and three shimmers, it is just very limited.

The Milk Mascara is in all ways fabulous. I am already regretting that this is a sample size and I will put this on my next mascara purchase list. It is really nice. It is a lengthening and lifting mascara and that is exactly what it does. I am a fan.

the balm liquid lip is nice as well. The color is not my favorite but I do like the formula. last time I didn’t wear it long enough to get a true feel for it. It is a bit sticky and it doesn’t dry down completely, but it is a comfortable formula to wear and it has great color saturation. I just wish it was in a different color. Still good formula.

And that was me today. To be honest I didn’t get a lot done and will probably be working late tonight, but sometimes productivity has to be sacrificed to life. Today was just one of those days. It happens, that’s just life. And I know that my mother feels calmer about the decision she has to make. I may still get her a feathered pirate’s hat for Christmas, but I’ll make that decision after I see how everything shakes out and how she feels about it when the dust settles.

For now, it is back to work for me.

The Daily: August 29th, 2022

Good afternoon my darlings. I feel a bit more centered after the weekend. On Thursday and Friday I did major shuffling and spent large chunks of Saturday coming up with a new schedule. And now I have a plan. I am still waiting for an exact date for travel, but there is a plan in place.

I know that sounds strange but as long as I have a plan, I am okay. It doesn’t have to be a set in stone plan, I am okay if parts of it need to be adapted to meet real world situations, but I need some sort of plan in my head to keep myself balanced.

It is sort of my mental security blanket.

And now I have it in place. I did also get some down time on Sunday which helped. I think that part of everything has been the constant running from one crisis to another this year. 2022 has been quite the year for the family. With luck after this things will at least calm down a little while recovery is taking place.

At this point I am hoping for a quiet October. As that is also when the weather will break and the outside world becomes lovely to move through again, I am very much looking forward to a glorious October.

At least that is what I am telling myself. As October is usually natural disaster free, I have high hopes.

This morning I went on a lovely walk before the weather got too warm. It wasn’t as nice as last week. Last week morning walks were taken in 68 degree temps with 80% humidity. Today the humidity remains around 80% but the temps were about 78 instead. So there was a lot of sweat and a shower, but the physical exercise made me feel better.

The trick will be remembering to do indoor exercises this afternoon when i need a break and not trying my luck with an afternoon walk. That is always the trick. Because mid afternoon is when I need a mental break from whatever I am working on as well as a good leg stretch and a walk really helps with both of those. It is just the wrong time of year.

And actually if any of you reading this are thinking about getting active, whether it is for weight loss or mental health or any other reason, I highly suggest walking. It is absolutely amazing hpow much better everything feels after a little walk. Even if it is just a circle around the neighborhood or a little way down the street where you turn around and come back. It is good physically just to get you moving, but more than that, it is a mental break. It let’s you clear your mind and gives you a little space to organize your thoughts. It helps in so many ways.

And I know that some of you love the gym and the treadmill, but there is something about a walk outdoors that just really helps the mind in different ways than the gym does. maybe it is the external stimulus of the world instead of the organized gym space, or just the fresh air. Maybe it is the relatively slow pace of a walk versus the treadmill. It is different and I advise everyone to give it a try.

Just not in the midafternoon when the heat and humidity are brutal. That I don’t think anyone would advise. So this afternoon I will make do with a bit of yoga.

Today was an interesting makeup day for me. I had the Touch in Sol primer out, which I love so i went ahead and used it. It is a good light weight primer and it has been a standard for a long time. I actually need to finish out this bottle as it is getting kind of low and I want it use it before it runs out.

Thinking of products that I need to use up before they expire, I pulled out the Pretty Vulgar Cool AF Lave Water Foundation. Yeah… There isn’t that much left in the bottle and I fear it is past it’s expiration date. It felt okay when I applied it. The scent was stronger than I remembered and smelled a little more like paint than it ever has before. Still I thought it would be okay. I took my pictures and about ten minutes later, I started feeling a little itchy. Which has never happened with this foundation. While I was hoping to use the last of it before it expired, I think I may have missed the mark. I washed my face and am now sans makeup. I do really like the Pretty Vulgar Lava Water Foundation. It is light weight and looks good on the skin. I would have lover to finish the bottle, but alas the remnants will be going into the trash. I will be repurchasing it, but I just didn’t use it fast enough. I am trying to whittle down the products I have, foundation wise, so I can only keep a few on hand that I can rotate more quickly through.

I always feel really bad when a product expires before I can use it up. Especially when it is a good product. But we must press on.

The Kim Chi Bronzer was nice today. I dipped lightly in the pan and went delicately on the skin with it. It is a very pigmented product but it blends beautifully. I just need to remember to be delicate and all is well.

The benefit blush in Georgia is much less pigmented so I had to be less careful with it. I really like the lighter blush with the bronzer. Maybe it is because I have to be so careful with the darker bronzer that I like the relative abandon of the lighter blush. I have to be more careful in the winter with this blush as it is more of a winter shade for me, but I love the formula of Benefit blushes so I never mind reaching for them.

With the St. Luxe Highlighter I am still trying to get a handle on it. I love the color and for a moment when i apply it, there is a soft warm glow to the skin. It blends in beautifully. And looks good. Ten minutes later the golden glow I liked is almost gone. I am still trying to figure out if it disappears as it dries down or if I am just using too light a hand when applying it. I will have to play around with it some more.

The Milk Makeup Rise mascara is fantastic. This is my first use of it and I am already regretting the sample size is so small. I got amazing lengths with just one swipe. I will be using this until the small tube is empty (because it is such a small sample size) but it won’t be a hardship and I can already tell this is going on my list of products to purchase in the full size.

There are two other new products today. Both I had reservations about because of the colors but both were products I wanted to try. The first is the Bellapierre Peach Blossom Palette.

I’ll be honest, I saw it and wasn’t too enthused. It has one matte and three shimmers and the one matte looked really coral in the pan. Admittedly so did the lipstick, so this week I decided to go coral. Coral is not really my thing.

I was pleasantly surprised by both actually. I have never tried a bellapierre eyeshadow. Many other products yes, but not the shadow. It came off as a deeper pinkish shade than I was expecting. And which I found much mote pleasant. It is not a deeply pigmented shadow but it applies well and blends okay. There is a line between the matte and the shimmer where they met but I am okay with that. Since there is one matte and three shimmers, this week it is going to be the matte paired with each shimmer for the day. This was the first one. Neither shade is all that special, but it is a simple slim hard plastic cased palette which, if it works out could be good for a weekend trip. We shall see how I feel by the end of the week.

The Balm lipstick was also very coral in color. It wasn’t as bad as I feared. I applied and then blotted and found I could live with the color. Admittedly I didn’t have to live with it for the full day, due to the foundation snafu. so I can’t tell how it wears throughout the day, but it applied well and dried down fairly quickly. It didn’t feel all that drying on the lips, but admittedly I wore it less than an hour, so a longer wear time is needed for determination. But it was a promising start. While I have used many The Balm products, I have never had one of their lip products, so even though the color isn’t a go to shade for me it is nice to test out their formula.

And that was more or less me. At least for the beginning of today. I am currently bared faced and will probably stay that way since it is just me at the desk. I may go for a face mask this afternoon. A detoxifying one actually, just incase any nastiness was left behind by the expired foundation. Let this be a warning to you all, check your expiration dates and don’t be afraid to let something go. Expired makeup is just not worth it. Although I will be repurchasing the Pretty Vulgar Foundation. I just can’t use this one any more.

A Week of OFRA’s Signature Symphony Palette

L to R: Sublime, Charm, Blissful, Tempo and Godiva

Recently I have been using the OFRA Signature Palette – Symphony. It came in a Boxycharm Premium and retails on OFRA’s Website for $32.There are five pans. There is one shimmer (Sublime), One satin (Tempo), two mattes (Charm and Godiva) and an eyeshadow that is essentially an OFRA Highlighter (Blissful). I love OFRA Highlighters and I think that is smart actually. It works really well as both a stunning shadow and as a highlight.

And to be honest, OFRA’s highlighters are so big it takes forever to actually get through one of them, so I don’t mind having the smaller highlight. These are not the first eyeshadows that I have tried from OFRA. I really love the formula. They are very saturated colors. While the darker shades can scatter powder around the eye, if you tap the brush off before using it is generally not a problem.

The quality of the shadows is there.

The mix of shadows in general works well the Lighter matte (Charm) is almost exactly my skin color when applied so it doesn’t show up well and is okay-ish as a transition. The shimmer (Sublime) is stunning and the brownish shade (Godiva) is pigmented with a reddish tinge to it. It is also a bit more powdery than the other shadows and takes a little bit more time to blend out. It actually works a lot better if you use an eyeshadow Primer.

The highlight/shadow, Blissful, is stunning. There is the cranberry colored satin shade (Tempo) that is the biggest pop of color in the palette. And boy does it pop. As with all of these shadows, one dip in the pan is enough o cover the eye. The problem is that if you use that shade it will dominate. It is very difficult to tread softly with Tempo and using it with any other shadow obliterates the other shadow.

Except for the highlighter, Blissful. It can hold it’s own with the shade Tempo.

For me this makes this a rather limited use palette. I can create a look with the cranberry shade, either with or without the highlighter. I can use the brown with the shimmer or the highlighter or even on it’s own. I have tried varying the looks over the past two weeks, but the truth is they all tend to come out fairly similar.

Which doesn’t mean I don’t like them. I do actually. I just think it is a palette I would pull out for a day of use, not one I would use for a week or so. It certainly isn’t one I would travel with, which is a bit of a shame. It is the perfect size for traveling.

the removable pans from other palettes

While I like this palette, what bothers me is that all of the other OFRA Palettes I have from blush to face, have removable pans. I really like this, especially in these plastic hard case palettes. It means that when a shade runs out I can replace the shade and just put the new one in an exiting palette without wasting the plastic palette. It also means I can customize the palette. If there is a shade that doesn’t work for me I can swap it out.

It is one of the things I especially like about OFRA Palettes, that removability/reusability.

This palette has the hard plastic case but unlike the other palettes, the shadows can’t be removed. They don’t have that little divot to the side that lets you take the pan out of the palette. I know it is from their signature collection which might be why the shadows can’t be removed, but even if they didn’t want them swapped with other shades it would be nice to have the option to replace a shadow once it ran out if I liked it enough to use it to pan.

I find it wasteful especially since their other palettes have this feature. Other than that they are beautiful shadows that stay in place all day. I just could never control the cranberry shade. I like it and it pairs well with the silver of blissful. I will actually probably reach for it a lot in the fall and winter. I just can’t make it play well with others. because of this and the inability to remove pans, I find this OFRA Signature Symphony Palette a nice, but limited use palette.

Trying out the Real Her I am Divine Power Wear Probiotic Foundation

I have been trying to be better about rotating products and using them up in a timely manner. I am also trying to whittle down some of my products so that I only have the products that I like to wear. In general I am pretty good with foundations. I will give a product a week or two long trial while I play with it and try to determine the best application method and if I really like the product. If I don’t then it is almost always passed on immediately to someone who will use it. Foundations either work well for me or they are sent away.

It is one of the reasons that most of my daily use foundation reviews are fairly consistently positive. If the product makes it into the makeup rotation than I like it. I think it is because foundations are pretty easy to use without contaminating the product. Most of the ones I have are pump style. I pump them onto my hand and then apply from there so all that is needed is a quick wipe down of the pump and they can go to a friend with no worries. Which makes it a guilt free pass.

bare face

However occasionally products are forgotten, or come in with a subscription box and I forget to try them out. I pulled this RealHer I am Divine Power Wear Probiotic Foundation out of the drawer and while i think I may have tried it once, I honestly couldn’t remember trying it out. And so we have a foundation trial. Incidentally, I am Divine is actually the shade name. There are 20 shades and this is on the lighter end of the spectrum. Number 4 actually. So there are only three shades lighter.

In all fairness it is slightly too light for my current skin tone, but I am not actually bothered by that. while I have been darkening it a bit with bronzer, the reason it doesn’t bother me is because it is a true foundation rather than a tinted moisturizer. I tend to wear foundation products like this in the cooler months rather than the warmer ones so once my summer tan fades this will actually be the right shade for me. while there are foundations I don’t mind wearing in the summertime, this isn’t really one of them so I am okay with it only being my post summer shade.

application (1 pumps worth of dots)

But before we get into that, let’s look at the product page.

Allow your natural beauty to shine through with this natural-finish, long-wear foundation.

REAL TIPS – For a sheerer coverage application, mix with one or two pea-sized drops of your favorite gel or cream moisturizer.

REAL PAIRING – Use our Power Wear Liquid Foundation with our dual-ended “Building My Empire” Makeup Applicator for a sanitary, smooth application.

Real Her
blends easily and covers well

Okay I know that is a lot of info for a foundation but i wanted to copy it out because there is a lot of interesting stuff in there. First, I’m pretty sure it has been proven that blue light doesn’t have any noticeable effect on the skin so I will just ignore that bit. But I do like the probiotic part and I did find that my skin did feel hydrated during wear. when I applied this foundation, I used one pump and it was more than enough product to cover my entire face. I could not imagine putting three pumps worth of product onto my skin.

For my application I pumped the product onto my hand and then dotted it onto my face. I used a foundation brush to blend it out. I found that there were streaks in the foundation and I did have to go over my face with a makeup sponge. Incidentally the Building my empire makeup applicator is a wand with basically two sponges on either end so this is a foundation designed more for makeup sponge application than brush.

This Real Her foundation does blend well and it has good coverage. It is the sort that needs a prefilling primer underneath. I tried it with and without primers and without primers it does cover up redness and blemishes, but it tends to show fine lines, wrinkles and pores. With a porefilling primer it turned out well.

just the foundation

Once in place it does tend to stay there. However towards the mid afternoon I did notice i had to apply a little powder to dial back the shine. I think with the probiotic element in there it leans towards shine rather than matte. It looks great in the morning, but just needs a little powder in the afternoon. I did try the sheer coverage application style as well with the foundation mixed with a moisturizer. It was a pretty good sheer coverage, but it too required a powder bot mid day.

foundation with other products in full sunlight

while this is a light feeling foundation, it is not as weightless as some of the other products I have used. In addition, it’s tendency to look a little greasy mid afternoon, makes me not want to use it in the warmer months. I think this would be less of a problem in the winter time, not only because there is less humidity in the winter but my skin is also a little drier. I think this foundation would simply pair better with my skin when I am less sweaty and my skin is in its ‘dry’ season. It is the reason I am not concerned that it is my winter shade. For me, this is a winter foundation. I liked wearing it now, but it wasn’t my favorite. I strongly suspect that it is a foundation that will simply wear better when the humidity is not that high.

If you live in a less humid climate this may be okay for summer wear for you. And again for me it was pretty good, I just know that there are some products that aren’t really summer wear for where I live. this is one of them. I am looking forward to wearing this foundation again once the summer fades. Of course at this point I am also just looking forward to the summer fading. But that is another story. In the end I would repurchase this foundation and it has earned a spot in my foundation drawer. I will keep this RealHer Power Wear Probiotic Foundation, I just won’t be purchasing it in multiple shades for different seasons.
