The Daily: May 3rd, 2022

Good afternoon my darlings. The rain has returned and the humidity level is high. As a result my bangs have decided that an 80s style poof is the way to go. They won’t get there without the help of a teasing comb a round brush and a boat load of Aqua Net, but they are trying. So I am doing my best to ignore them today.

I made no attempt to go outside. It was raining when I woke up, it rained through the morning and it is raining now. I’m trying to think of the fabulous germination my newly planted seeds are getting and less of the walk I will not be taking. It is the down side to building a walking trail in the flood plain. It rains, the trail floods. But I will not harp on it, even though I am still casting longing looks out of the window.

The reason it is so important is that I know on rainy days like this I always slack off a bit on my exercise. I tell myself to push hard, but I just know that I don’t push all that hard on days like today. In fact I don’t think I did much pushing in April, which is why the waist band of my jeans feels a little on the snug side. I have already accepted that on my first weigh in back I will have gained weight. I know everything got out of whack in April. I spent last week getting my meal plan back into alignment and this week I am ramping up the exercise.

Except today. Today I don’t think I pushed as hard as I could. I’ll be making up for it with lighter meals today, but I need to find something to keep me on track for the days when walking isn’t possible. Sadly I may have to go back to some sort of reward system. I had it in place for my initial weight loss plan then when i went to reward myself with something I wanted I found it was sold out and then I couldn’t think of a replacement so I let the system lapse. maybe I’ll keep the rewards in categories instead of specifics. A new pair of yoga pants instead of this specific pair of yoga pants. I think it was a pair of earrings that threw me last time. I saw this adorable pair of bumblebee earrings, but they were gone by the time I reached the reward point. nd then I didn’t see a pair I wanted. General may be the way to go on that. But that is something to figure out later. Maybe after dinner.

Today’s Look:

Pre Makeup Base: Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre

$10.00 OFF on Makeup Compact Powder. Embryolisse – the Dermo-cosmetic expertise.

Primer: Elf Poreless Putty Primer

Foundation: Yensa Super Serum Silk Foundation

Concealer: Dior Backstage Concealer

Bronzer/Blush/Highlight: Ultimate Glow Getter by Real Her

Powder: Kim Chi Puff Puff Pass Set and Bake Powder

Eyeshadow: The Balm and the Beautiful Eyeshadow Palette from The Balm

Mascara: Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Brag

Lips: Trestique Lip Crayon in Florence Fig

Okay today was a fun one. First off Love the embryolisse as a base. I apply it ten minutes before I apply anything else so my skin has time to absorb the cream in and everything just flows wetter with great hydrated skin and no cakey look to anything.

I am loving the way my eyes came out today

It really helped out the setting powder today as the air is so damp. between the humidity and the cream I needed the setting powder to dial back the shine. It did sort of counteract my test of dry products though. I use the Real Her Palette today because I wanted all powder face products and it was just easiest to grab.

Normally I use this more in the summer time because it goes so well with a light tinted moisturizer natural look, but it applied well today. Ideally though this is a natural look palette. It is well loved though. Pan is showing in all three of the products and I am hoping it will make it through the summer. I don’t think it will make it past this summer so I will probably be replacing it in the fall. it is fantastic with a tinted moisturizer.

It did work well with the Yensa. This is an easy foundation to use actually and I am really enjoying it. My full review will be up this Thursday as I finish out my review.

I am falling in love with this palette from the Balm. I applied the shade Cut and thought wow that is a great all over shade, but since I am seeing how they blend I went for the darkest shade Cliff Hanger and really like the way it blended. I then used the silver shimmer of Roll Credits and it looks great. I am personally loving today’s eye look. If it keeps performing this well during the rest of the test (it is only the second day) I might just have found one of my everyday go to palettes because this was easy to reach for and has workable shades. The trick will see if I still like it next week or if it becomes slightly boring. There is always a fine line with an everyday neutral palette. We’ll have to see where this end up, but I have my fingers crossed for it.

Today I also reached for the ease of the Trestique lip crayon. I love these. This is the Florentine fig and I reach for the color often which is why it is almost a nub. It is comfortable to wear, the crayon is refillable and while one side is a matte color, the other side has a lip balm to go over it if you want a bit of shine. I am really a fan of the formula. It wears a bit like a traditional lipstick though. It won’t dry down and it will wear off. It is very comfortable to wear though.

And that my darlings is me today. my bangs are misbehaving but I love my eye look. I’d be nice if I could get the hair and makeup to cooperate on the same day, but i will take what I can get. And today, the eyes have it.

The Daily: April 26th, 2022

Good afternoon my darlings. I hope all is going well for you today. Here it is pouring down buckets. And while it does more or less doom my walk, both today and undoubtedly tomorrow as the floodwaters take over the park, I am feeling a little smug. Over the weekend my plants went into the garden and now they are getting the benefit of the rain.

Looking out into the garden makes all of the pains feel worthwhile. Or at least justified. And it is most definitely letting me put the muscle cream from a recent Boxycharm to the test. I’m still forming my thoughts on that, so I’ll get back to you.

Today there was yoga in the sun room, which was actually quite pleasant. Normally when the sun is not out the sunroom feels very cold. today with the rain sheeting down it felt very pleasant. Kind of warm and sheltered. It was a nice way to get a work out in. I still prefer the walks, but I am okay with taking a break from them now and again. And the yoga kept me from getting antsy between end of the month wrap up projects.

Today’s Look:

Pre Makeup base: Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre

Primer: Yensa Tone Up Primer

Foundation: Yensa Super Serum Silk Foundation

Bronzer: Trestique Bronzer stick

Blush: Illamasqua Colour Veil gel blusher

Highlighter: Saint Luxe Liquid Glow

Powder: Kim Chi Puff Puff Pass Set and Bake Powder

Eyeshadow: Sandbar The Mirage Palette

Mascara: Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Brag Mascara

Lipstick: MAC Love me Lipstick Bated Breath

Today I made a specific choice to use liquid and cream face products because I wanted to test something out. Yesterday I felt a little powdery as the day wore on. Today I wanted to see if I could counteract that with cream products. But lets start from the base and work outwards.

I used Embryolisse to start as moisture is my skin’s friend. And really I do not use much. It is a fraction of what I would use when i used this as a moisturizer. It is just enough to plump the skin with moisture before adding products on top. And it is really working out for me.

Because I noticed yesterday that the silk serum foundation was not as glow-y as the BC foundation I went with a a kind of glow-y primer. It is the Yensa one. I have used this one off and on for years and absolutely love it. It is something that I have no problem reaching for and was happy to pick up today. It has a slight tint to it which helps reduce the need for a concealer.

My skin was a bit on the glow-y side but not overly dewy when I applied the foundation. I know dewy is the look a lot of people are going for these days but half of the time I see someone with dewy skin and I just think they look greasy. Especially if that someone is me. I just can only take a certain level of dewy before I reach for the powder to pat it off. It is a personal preference but I don’t see that one changing for me. I was okay with the level of dewy.

As I said I wanted to try cream products with my setting powder to see if I could find a balance and I think today it worked. I used two of my favorites, the Trestique and the Illamasqua and they worked really well for me. I am really starting to like cream products more and more for my face. I don’t know if they have gotten better (because I have tried some stinkers in the past) or if I am getting used to using them or if my skin has reached an age where they are preferred, but i do like them. And these are two of my favorites.

This was my first use of the Saint Luxe and it is something i am going to have to play around with to see how I like it. I so like that it has an applicator wand so that it can be dotted precisely on the skin. I will be playing with it for a while and then comparing it to a couple of other liquid highlighters.

Once the cream products were applied I went for the Kim Chi Setting powder. I love the powder puff. It is thick enough to be practical. It is an actual powder puff instead of a thin little bit of foam. To be honest, once this powder is empty I will be keeping the puff to use with my other setting powders. Mostly because I do like a powder puff over a brush for final setting powder. It lets me use less product and to put it where it needs to be. Over cream products a little of this powder went a long way. It dimmed the shine back, which for me was preferred. I like the slight tint to it. It suits my skin tone well actually (PPP03 Translucent, in case you were wondering). The first time I tried it, I did notice that it got a bit powdery. i don’t know if it was because I used too much or because I used it over powder products. This is only the second time I’ve used this. Today i used less and I used mostly cream products and my makeup is still looking fabulous. As it is a new product, I will still have to play around with it.

Today with eyeshadow I went with the one matte and one shimmer look to see how they played together and I ended up liking how they blended together. It is a super simple look. The matte brown did take a little bit to work with. it is just so highly pigmented that One dip into the pan, a tap off of the excess and then applied to the lids still requires a second clean brush to blend it down. So even a quick and easy look takes a little time.

And the look was finished out with the ABH mascara and the Mac Lipstick. Both tried and true. This particular shade of MAC I need to think about replacing soon as the level of lipstick has lowered considerably. It is one of my go to lip products. It is one I will reach for first and then often have to remind myself to use something else today. Of course I have been eyeing the Ruby from the line as well so when I order there may be a couple of shades coming my way. But that is a thought for a different day.

As for today, I am happy with the look. And I just saw the mailman pull up outside of my house. My Look Fantastic box for April was hung up in shipping and is expected soon and this month there was an issue with my Underclub subscription. Basically it was never picked up by the postal service. So even though they told me April will be shipped out with May’s subscription, I still feel it’s absence and keep looking in the post. It’s absence was greatly felt this month. Although the Underclub service team was really nice about things an got back to me really quickly. So I am off to rescue the mail from the rain and then it is back to work for me. We are approaching the end of the month and it has become madness at the desktop. But the good thing is that by Friday it will be over for the month and next week should be smooth sailing. Or at least a more normal work load.

Hopefully.

The Daily: December 16th, 2021

Good afternoon my darlings! Today is a wonderful, glorious day. I am dancing and spinning with glee even as we speak. But what makes today so fabulous? I just finished the piece I have been editing. For the last few weeks I have had commas and paragraph points dancing in my eyes.

It has made me somewhat crazy to deal with and it has also increased the pressure around me. But now the editing is done, the new novel is in the system. Tomorrow it will be available for purchase and I will do the full announcement, but for now it is making it’s way through the computer’s system and there is literally nothing else I can do with it.

I have done my best and now everything is beyond my control.

Tomorrow of course I will worry about it and begin to suspect that I missed something vital somewhere along the way. For now I am reveling in the fantastic glory that is a completed novel.

Okay, breathing now. Happy dance becoming tamer.

This morning I went on a short walk. Once this is posted, I will probably go on a much longer walk. Then I will cool down and apply today’s face mask. I chose the Lookatme Raccoon Face Mask today. Mostly because I feel like I have spent the better part of the last two weeks with this same raccoon like expression on my face. I’ve tried the bear mask form this brand but I don’t think I have used the raccoon one. I know it is one of the line Facetory carries and is usually pretty good. This one is moisturizing and at this time of year, that is always a good bet for a face mask.

But before I get to that, I am going on a long walk where hopefully the sun, the wind and the exercises will blow the last of the punctuation fixation out of my brain.

Today’s Look:

Primer: OLE HENRIKSEN Banana Bright Primer

Foundation AoA Prowear Foundation

Bronzer: Too Faced Chocolate Soliel

Blush: Ciate London Marbled Light Blush

Powder: No 7 Perfect Light Pressed Powder

Eyeshadow: Storybook Cosmetics Little Briar Rose Palette

Mascara: ABH Lash Brag

Lips: M2UNYC liquid lip in SOHO

I’ll be honest, while I am still testing out this new foundation, i mostly grabbed products that were easy to work with. I was trying to get the last loose ends tied up and while I wanted to look decent for a later meeting, I didn’t have a lot of extra time. I went for the Too Faced Bronzer because it is darker and this foundation is just a smidge too light for me. the shade issue is easily corrected if I decide that I want to continue using the foundation. I went with the Ole Henriksen primer thought because it is one of the few hydrating primers I like and at this time of year a little extra moisture helps keep everything from looking a little powdery.

Over all I think this look turned out pretty well for me. I’m happy with all of the products I used. I need to remember to reach for the Ole Henriksen primer more actually as it is it’s time of year to shine. I can’t use it in the summer because the banana bright aspect makes me look a little too shiny for my comfort. It works really well in the colder months though. Todays look may have been quick and easy, but I am very happy with the way it turned out and it will stand me in good stead with my late afternoon/early evening meeting. Which is also a good chance to test the longevity of the foundation.

but for now, I am going on a long walk to allow my brain to switch gears. And then, I get to look at the list of other things that need to be completed before I can rest easy and slip into the holidays. Happy Thursday Everyone!

The Daily: October 7th, 2021

In what I’m certain is likely to become the October refrain, today’s walk was a quick dash between rainstorms followed by a bit of Youtube Yoga. At the moment I’m not following anyone specifically, otherwise I’d link it. I really do need to sit down and sort of think through some workouts as this seems to be cropping up often. At the moment I sort of look at the time and say, Oh I have fifteen minutes or oh only 12 minutes, perfect. I need to actually create play lists like ‘Arms’ or ‘Abs’ so I can focus a bit more.

Perhaps that will be a weekend goal.

For now I at least feel confident that I managed to move around enough to keep me from feeling twitchy while I work. Hopefully it will be enough to show up on the scale. But even if the numbers don’t move this week, I feel pretty good about the level of activity and my attention to calories. While I may have no idea what my snack from the Tokyo Treat Box had in it, everything else was well monitored. So I feel pretty good about that.

In fact, I just feel pretty good in general. And it is pretty good to feel good. So I am just going to hold on to that feeling.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer

Foundation: Revolution Fast Base Foundation Stick

Bronzer: Trestique Bronzing Stick

Blush: Benefit Cosmetics Gold Rush Blush

Highlight: Ofra in Blissful

Eyeshadow: Ciate London the Trend Edit

Mascara: ABH Lash Brag

Lips: MAC in Bated Breath

Setting Spray ABH Dewy Set

I know, I’m still trying to use up the discontinued primer. Slowly but surely it is being used up. The link above will take you to the Urban Decay Primers, even though this one is discontinued, they have other primers and currently they ae on sale for 30% off.

The Revolution stick foundation I really like. I forget about it for long stretches, then use it and wonder how I could have actually forgotten about it. It is a great product, especially for travel. It is creamy and blends well. I also managed to get the perfect shade for me so at the moment this is my go to travel foundation.

I’ve actually been thinking about travel more lately as autumn sets in. I will be traveling for Thanksgiving this year so I’m having to put together a travel kit. My last travel was Christmas of 2019 I took apart my travel kit and used up open products so that they wouldn’t go to waste. Now I am actually having to think about all of the items going into the new bag. I’m also going to have to look at replacing my travel bag soon. I know, I keep promising myself that I will and then I forget about it when I am not traveling, and then when I am traveling I remind myself to do it once the traveling stops.

It is an endless cycle and one that I am going to break. I’ve actually been debating between the Navy Collection and the Gray red vacationer bag from Kusshi. I just like the look of them and the functionality of the bags. At the moment the vacationer bag with the organizer is on sale so that may end up deciding me as I really like their organizers as well. I ended up getting one of their limited edition animal print bags for my mom a few years back and she absolutely loves it. It has worn really well.

https://www.kusshi.com/collections/sale/products/copy-of-makeup-bag-organizer-grey-leather

Not that i actually used my mom as a test case. She just needed a new makeup bag and I thought she would like this one. Which she does. I just got the added benefit of seeing it in action.

But speaking of travel, that is one of the thoughts that caused me to pull out the Ciate palette today. This is a little square palette with a hard plastic case. I like the hard case for traveling shadows. And these are both really nice shadows and a good general mix. The mattes are all in the brown and reddish brown category, but the shimmers are more varied so it can be used as an everyday kind of palette or the shimmers can be used to punch up the colors. I used dry brushes today but with wet brushes these shimmers really pop. It is definitely a good contender for this year’s travel palette.

Today for the setting spray I used the ABH Dewy set. While I like the way the cap locks into place I am not sure I would repurchase this. The mist is a bit heavy and the coconut scent is pretty strong. It works well, but between the spray and the scent, I think this is one product i will be using and not repurchasing.

And with that, it is back to work for me. I hope you are having a good Thursday as well my darlings, because I really do feel good in my skin today and I think that everyone should have that feeling as well. I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow with the weekly weigh in.

The Daily: September 15th, 2021

Good Afternoon my darlings and welcome to the middle of the week. I don’t know why but it always feels like an uphill battle to reach Wednesday. Sort of like an office version of wading uphill through molasses. Somehow once Wednesday is over the process is reversed and I try very hard not to be swept down hill by the swiftly flowing flood waters.

I know it is nothing new. But for the moment I am between the slog and the desperate attempt not to be rushed towards the weekend. It is the moment where I caught up with everything that needed to be caught up, and I am now surveying the large expanse of week left before me. It will all change in the morning, but I’ll take it for today.

It is a strange day though. My baby doll is home today. He is taking some really strong antibiotics to knock a really nasty sinus infection out and today the antibiotics have sent him a bit woozy. Its like the antibiotics decided today was the day to marshal their forces and attack the sinus infection in mass and need all of their resources to do it. He has oscillated between napping and wandering through out the house in a bit of a zombie like state.

Admittedly a lot of it was sleeping, but there were many bouts of questions about where we keep things. Which is less that he doesn’t know where things are and more that he just wanted a little attention because he felt badly. So it was a productive, but interrupted day. It also means that I am skipping my walk to stay close today.

At the moment is is down for the count. And he actually went down for the count with a smile. When the mail arrived today it brought him some Huron Bath products. Its a bath and body care line for men (I’ll link the website below in the ad if you are interested).

My babydoll is fun with bath products. He really likes to think of himself as a very basic sort of person. And he will never actually buy bath products for himself But he really likes using some of the “fancier” products if the “happen” to be in the bathroom and they don’t smell girly.

I know he doesn’t actually believe that there is a bath products fairy that visits our house every time his soap gets low, but I think he likes to think he is just using what is naturally there. And he always gets a little smile when he sees that “fancy” products have come into the house and are for him. Admittedly he also appropriates some of my products sometimes.

Now that bath season is upon us (or at least close by, it is still a bit too hot to actually sit in a bath tub) I’ve reordered the Zents Mandarin Bath Truffles and I am certain at least half of them will be used by my babydoll. On a cold night after a long day he really likes sitting in a hot well scented bath while listening to a pod cast and sipping on a glass of whiskey.

Which reminds me I need to look into some small speakers for the bathroom and or shower. I want to get them as a nice surprise going into the holiday season. With all that is going on it is likely to be a stressful one and I know he loves listening to podcasts in the bath but is paranoid of dropping his ear buds in the water. I might do some research this evening if he decides to sleep it away. Even though it won’t be an actual holiday gift, I need to start getting my holiday gift buying list together anyway so now seems as good a time to start as any. But that is for later.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer

Foundation Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation

Bronzer: Ciate London Bamboo Bronzer in South Beach

Blush: bareMinerals Bounce and Blur Blush

Highlighter: Illamasqua Beyond Powder Highlighter in OMG

Powder: No 7 Perfect Light Pressed Powder

Eyeshadow: Tarteist Pro Palette

Mascara: ABH Lash Brag Mascara

Lips: Wet ‘n Wild Mega Last Lipstick

Setting spray: Benefit Cosmetics The Porfessional Supper Setter Setting Spray.

Necklace: The Rachel Zoe Collection

I’ll be honest I mostly went for products that were easy to use. Most of these are products I don’t have to think about too much, I just know they are going to perform. I know it makes for a less than exciting makeup application, but today I just needed to go for what works.

There is also an element of I forgot I had that, or I haven’t used that in a while. I always get that right after a declutter. It is where things that got buried resurface and I fall in love all over again. Foundations are a big one with this category. With foundations I will give them a week’s trial and if I don’t like them I send them on their way quickly. I also really love foundation samples. That way I can generally tell if a foundation is worth picking up. This is especially important with the pricier ones.

The Koh Gen Do is kind of up there in price (I generally wait for a sale to pick it up). The problem is that I get it into my head that I can only use it for special occasions. And really, it is my ‘going out’ foundation. I heard a lot of hype about this foundation and how fabulous it was and I was skeptical. But Koh Gen Do lets you order sample packets in a range of shades of their foundation so you can find your shade by trying out the range. It is a fairly inexpensive way to try the foundation actually. And so worth it. It melts into the skin, blends beautifully and is just all round fantastic. It is the one I reach for when I am going someplace ‘nice’. I need to start reaching for it more often as it is a great foundation and really, I’m not going that many places. If we go out for food we typically end up getting the food to go so at the moment ‘nice’ means running to the library or Target.

But it is the foundation that I don’t have to worry about and today, that was what I wanted. I also wanted a little while to myself to put it on which is about what I got. I think it turned out well. At least I’m happy with the look. I’m also somewhat tickled that my go to, easy to use products range from my most expensive foundation and primer to what has to be one of my least expensive lipsticks. Still in expensive or not, Wet’ n Wild megalast lipstick is well worth keeping around. And it is a formula that can easily hold it’s own in the makeup bag with the pricier products. And in the end what works, works regardless of price. The price range does amuse me though.

The Daily: August 30th, 2021

Good afternoon my darlings and welcome to the start of a new week. It was an interesting weekend for me. Quiet, but interesting. My main focus was to get my sleep patterns back to something resembling normality, which I did.

It was nice.

I know alarm clocks are useful and lord knows I wouldn’t get up on time if I didn’t have one, but I really enjoy having two days where i get to wake up when my body decides it wants to wake up instead of being startled awake by the alarm.

Beyond sleep, I started in on some of my fall to do list. The manicure, I put off a bit. However I did start my decluttering, which I’ll be posting about this week, and more importantly I went shopping for new bras. I know not the most exciting thing, but more than any other garment in my wardrobe, my bras take a beating in the summer time.

While in the gym I tend to remember to wear the sports bras. When on a walk through the park, I generally just walk in whatever I happen to be wearing. So I generally end the summer restocking and bidding several bras a fond farewell. The Bali bras are really good as they are comfortable and durable. While the fit is nice, I think one of my favorite aspects are the straps. They are wide enough to comfortably support without digging into my shoulders. And these bras will last me all year and well into next summer.

Very few of my undergarments worn on walks in the summer time actually survive the summer. Each spring I designate older undergarments as “walking wear” and between the sweating and the washing they just take a beating. Hence the sort through and replace every fall. But as soon as the heat breaks I get to wear my nicer undergarments on a more regular basis, which is nice.

I have to admit that i love the underwear clear out in the fall. as the summer progresses the drawer just looks worse and worse. I have a line of nicer things off to the side, mostly including my Underclub sets as well as nicer things I wear going out, but the everyday walking wear just looks worse and worse as the summer goes on. So the clear out always makes me feel really happy.

It is my first declutter of the season.

Followed shortly thereafter by other declutters. I do like declutters, not only do they make things feel fresh (if only because I reorganize and put everything where it belongs) but I always find things that i forgot I had so even if I don’t go shopping, I feel like I have some new things. That actually applies to my makeup today as well.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Benefit Cosmetics Porefessional Primer

Foundation: Pretty Vulgar Cool AF Lava Water Foundation

Blush: Ciate London Marbled Light Blush

Bronzer: Lottie London Sunburst Bronzer

Powder: No 7 Perfect Light Powder

Highlight: Laura Geller Baked Original Highlighter in French Vanilla

Eyeshadow: Lime Crime Prelude Exposed Palette

Mascara: ABH Lash Brag

Lips: bareMinerals Gen Nude in Pout

Setting Spray Farsali Rose Gold Face Mist

The Benefit Cosmetics Porefessional is one of my favorite primers. I actually picked it up today because I thought it felt a little hollow and I wanted to see how much product was left in it. I squeezed the air out of the tube and it turs out there is a lot more than I thought there was so I am happy. I tend to pick up the holiday kits to restock on a lot of Benefit products (partially because I really like the tins as well a the products) and I think my primer will last until the Holiday kits come out. As we are reaching the end of August it actually won’t be that long. Halloween decorations are already in stores and with Thanksgiving barely a blip on the retail radar, the holiday kits, advent calendars and black Friday sales aren’t that far away.

And yes I’ve already started my list of both presents to pick up this year and things I want to stock up on here. I know, Labor day sales are just kicking off and I will be taking advantage of some of them but honestly, in my house we have always done things for the home on Labor Day. I’m pretty sure all of our major appliance purchases were Labor Day ones. At the moment the only big house purchase we have coming up is a mattress. I know Sleephead has a sale going on. I think we might take advantage of that one this year pick up one of the gel toppers and then maybe look at Purple for the mattress sale. Their labor day sale is up to $350 off so it is definitely a good time to look into the replacement. Well technically we should have picked up a replacement last year but never got around to it. So this year is a must. (I’ll link both sales down below if anyone is interested.)

Beyond that I am redoing a lot of my desk so I can get more organization in my life. I’ve been looking at Sonix and Multitasky for a lot of those items and hope to have a plan in place soon so i can take advantage of those sales. But that is off topic.

To the makeup, batman!

I admit, I forgot completely about the Pretty Vulgar Foundation. I really like the way it blends into the skin and this shade really does work well for me. I found it in my foundation drawer. It was on it’s side and because of the shape of the bottle it rolled towards the back. It is just a little too tall to actually stand up. I think the only reason that I forgot it is because when I think of Pretty Vulgar I automatically think of The Feather’s mascara. But I really need to remember this foundation as well, because it really is good medium coverage that feels feather light on the skin.

Seeing the Ciate Blush in the Look Fantastic box reminded me of the marbled light blush so I pulled it out today. While I like the Glow to illuminating blush, I personally prefer the look of the marbled light. And I was happy to use it.

The No 7 is a long term staple. I know I don’t have to tell you again hoe much I love this powder.

The bronzer however was one I honestly didn’t know I had. I knw I had a Lotte London Blush somewhere but I could not remember getting the Bronzer. I’m guessing it came in an IPSY Bag a while ago and I just forgot it. I think this is the first time I’ve used it. I found it interesting. It is a Coconut scented bronzer. The faux coconut scent is pretty strong and to be honest, I don’t like the scent. The bronzer itself, I actually really like. It goes on well, blends nicely and thus far today has worn really well. I think I actually like it enough to ignore the scent. I’m going to keep it out for a few days to try it out and see if the scent is something i can ignore or if after a few days it is what causes me to want to push the bronzer away.

This is the second time I’ve used the Laura Geller baked highlighter and I am impressed. It is a nice highlight with absolutely no glitter in it. Often times if I know I have a meeting for work I will completely skip the highlighter because I don’t want any glittery mess. This is perfect for an office. It adds the light without the sparkle. And while I like sparkle as much as the next person, sometimes it isn’t appropriate. This is a product i am keeping around for office wear. As a caution, A light hand is needed otherwise there is just a light powder smear. It blends better of you go in light. if you go in heavy it is harder to blend in.

For eyeshadow I just wanted something quick today so I just used the Abyss in my Lime Crime Palette as a one and done look. It blended well with my bareminerals lip gloss (another fave) and I was happy. It was a simple look today, which is fine for me. It is a day spent mostly at the computer so I didn’t feel the need to go too crazy. So quick and easy ruled the day.

Purple

Reviewing the Norvina Palette Vol 1 by Anastasia Beverly Hills

I admit freely that I am much more of a neutral palette kind of person. While I do like reds and pinks, I do tend to use them as a backdrop. They are just a hint of color behind the brown or possibly black, shadow. Part of that is the consequence of working so long in a very conservative office environment. Glitter was not appreciated.

Although i often snuck in a good bronze shimmer.

Even in a conservative arena, I can’t resist a good coppery/bronze shimmer.

row 1

Part of it is also that I adore deep dark lipstick, Reds and berry shades are kind of my favorite and you can be forgiven bright lips with tame eyeshadow. Admittedly several neutral lipsticks have grown on me as of late and perhaps as a consequence I have been drawn to brighter eyeshadow.

Ah the Yin and Yang of lipstick and eyeshadow.

This Norvina palette Volume 1 was a product that came to me via a Boxy Charm Box. It was a choice, There were several palettes and I looked at this one and thought, ‘I have very few of those shades in my collection.’ so I chose it.

row 2

I don’t know if I would have picked it up on my own. One of the reasons I don’t own a lot of purple shadows is that when I use them I tend to come out looking like Ursula the Sea Witch. While there is a time and a place for Disney imitation, it doesn’t come around often enough that i feel the need to keep purple shadows around.

Row 3

Half of using this palette was figuring out the application process. But first the specifics. There are five rows of shadows in the palette and five shadows in each row giving a total of twenty five shadows. Ah basic math, how I love you. Eight of these shadows are shimmer shades and the rest are matte.

Row 4

All of the matte shades are highly pigmented. In fact if you look on the palette information some of them are not recommended for use on the eyes because they tend to stain the skin. And stain they do. It is predominantly the purple shadows that stain. They leave an oddly red toned stain behind. In the picture below this is my eyelid after removing my makeup when I used A3 on my lids. The shadows aren’t named, but rather given number assignments. Row one is A and the colors are numbered one through five. Then there are rows B to E with each of the shadows again numbered one to five.

Row 5

The mattes applied well and they were long lasting. Some even lasting through makeup remover. They stayed put and didn’t crease. They were however very messy to apply. Unless you employ some sort of shield, this is a palette you want to work with before applying the rest of your makeup. Even with tapping the brush off before applying, the side of my nose and my under eye were often coated in shadow when I applied it. It is just a formula that sprays about a lot.

lid after shadow removal

I also found that I needed to be very precise in my application. Using this eyeshadow was a job for the smaller blending brushes in my collection. Using the larger fluffier brushes made me feel a bit out of control. It brought out the Sea Witch look. Once I switched to a smaller brush and was more precise with the application, the shadows worked well. They blend really well without becoming muddy and were long lasting.

Just remember to use a smaller brush to control the application and that you will have to dust off your nose and under eye area and the shadows are fine. In the mattes, i have to admit, I fell in love with the flat whit shade. C1 if you are counting. It sounds strange to say, but I think it was my favorite shadow.

I could apply the super bright colors and think it was a little too dark and then add the flat white to the inner corner. then I could blend the white out and soften some of the more intense colors. For me, this shade made the palette a lot more wearable.

And now we get to the shimmers. To be honest, I didn’t care for them all that much. They swatch much better than they apply. If applied with a dry brush they don’t apply well at all. If used with a wet brush they do become brighter and easier to apply. They also don’t dribble down the face. They tend to stay put all day.

The problem with the shimmers is that the other matte shades are so strong that the shimmers become somewhat irrelevant. The bright mattes are the star of this palette and they overpower the shimmers. If the shimmers are used with more neutral mattes, they are great. They stand out then. But at the same time, the shimmers aren’t that unusual. I have those exact shades in other formulas, some I like better than these others not as much. They aren’t bad shimmers, they just ride the middle line between not bad and not spectacular.

This is a palette that is all about the mattes and really all about the purples. The Norvina Volume 1 is bright and vibrant and contains a lot of colors that I don’t have elsewhere. It isn’t going to become an everyday palette for me, but it is one that I will reach for when I am in the mood for something bright.

The Daily: August 17th, 2021

Good afternoon my darlings. Today, the rain has come. It came down in fits and spurts yesterday but I managed to get a short walk in between the showers. Today, there was no possibility of that happening. It rained steadily throughout the night and the pace the rain is holding now is likely to last throughout the rest of the day. Curtesy of the Tropical Storm Fred, of course.

There will be no walking.

I do however feel less paranoid about skipping the gym for the moment as yesterday they announced they were going to be shut down today for a deep clean. So first of all, I wouldn’t have been able to get to the gym anyway. Second I heard from a friend of mine who also goes to the gym that three trainers and a couple of members got sick.

So again, I feel less paranoid.

Today I will probably not go out at all anyway. Since we haven’t had rain for a while but have had a very high heat, the ground around here is baked to a solid brick. So we have lots of flash flooding as the water just rolls right off the ground instead of absorbing. Our area is riddled with creeks, most of which have now flooded their banks.

It’s a good day to stay home and work. Maybe I’ll break out my weights later when I need to move around for a bit. That’s one thing that no one tells you. Once you start working out and moving more in an effort to lose weight, your body gets used to the movement. When you suddenly don’t have the movement, you find yourself getting antsy if you sit for too long. Or at least I do. So hand weights, crunches on the yoga mat and maybe even a few jumping jacks and squats. Hopefully that will make up for the lack of movement throughout the day.

Today turned out to be a lot more glowy than I am used to. I feel very shiny actually. I saw the Vesca Primer (which came in August’s Boxy Charm Premium) and I realized I hadn’t tried it yet. So I decided today was the day for the first impression. I’ve actually never tried the brand before. In fact until it was featured in Boxycharm I had never heard of the brand and still know nothing about it.I dispensed the primer onto my hand and thought wow that’s bright. It has an iridescent sheen to it and wen applied, my skin was brightened and a little on the dewy side. It applies well and feels nice on the skin. It is a thinner formula and applies a bit like a water cream. I think that if I applied one of my regular foundations over it, I would have been fine, but I am using the Purlisse Radiant Glow this week.

Two radiant products are a bit much for me. I almost felt like I didn’t need a highlighter but I used a tiny smidge of the About Face anyway. Very little actually as I already felt very shiny.

The powder products helped bring down the shine a bit but in the future I think I will wear the Vesca under a matte foundation. I think there, it could give more depth to the matte. Likewise I will wear a matte primer under the Purlisse radiant glow.

Today was mostly about the eyes. Or more importantly the Norvina palette. Yesterday I used my regular brushes and with the intense pigment I felt like I was just splashing it all about. I felt very messy. Today I actually used only one brush. It was the LaRuce Tapered blending LR007. (I used a color switch to change colors)

The double oh seven worked well for me today. It blends well, but it is smaller than most of my other blending brushes. The smaller brush really helped me control the shadows and their placement. Aldo I dipped into the pan and tapped twice to shake off any loose pigment before lifting the brush to my eye. The double tap really helped me not coat the side of my nose with color as well. I kind of like how it turned out today. I was already feeling shiny so I stuck with mattes. I like how well they blended together. Over all I am quite pleased. I did have to slow down, use the smaller brush and double tap the brush before applying, but if I did, things went well. Perhaps if I possessed the skills of a MUA I would not need such tricks, but as my chosen art form involves words, I needed the assistance.

Today I opened the ABH Lash Brag Mascara. I wasn’t going to but when I went for my Wet ‘n Wild Big Poppa, the tube was so empty that it couldn’t be used. So I figured if another mascara was going in the bin, I could go ahead and open a new one. I will have to do a fallen mascara review. I was impressed with the Lash Brag actually. It went on easily, lifted, separated and lengthened well. It was dramatic enough to wear with the pigmented eyeshadow as well. Over all, I’m rather pleased with its first performance. It did quite well.

Today was an interesting mix for me. My face feels brighter and I have to resist the urge to blot my face with powder. I feel shiny and the urge is strong. However I did not pass many mirrors today so it was relatively easy to ignore. But now it is back to work for me. It is the day where the to do list looks longer than the hours available I am afraid. And so it is time to dive back in. I hope that whatever you are doing today, the rest of your day flows smoothly along.

The Daily: August 4th, 2021

Ah yes my darlings more of the same as this seems to be the way the week is going. Early workouts and loads of time spent at my desk. Not the most exciting I’ll grant you but I am slowly coming up to the mark. And I think I will be back to normal work hours tomorrow, which will be nice. I still have a deadline looming, but it isn’t looming as frighteningly at the moment, which is really nice. I am hoping to get everything cleared away and then do a revamp of my desk top space as we go into fall. I’ll keep you posted on that.

I did take the opportunity to just leave my hair down for the day since i wasn’t going anywhere. I figured just brushing it and letting it be would be a nice healthy treat for it. No heat, no braids, no ponytail holders of any sort, just down and done. It reminds me I really need to get into see a stylist to at least add some sort of shape to it (as well as knocking off several inches from the length), but it was nice to just let it be for a bit. I did indulge in a bright red lipstick though. I also took a moment to play with the Norvina Palette that came in July’s Boxy Charm.

Today’s look:

Primer: Elf Poreless putty Primer

Foundation: Pacifica Alight Clean Foundation

Bronzer: Nars Bronzer in Laguna

Blush: Floss Lip and cheek stain

Highlighter: Illamasqua cream highlighter in OMG

Powder: ABH Setting Powder

Mascara: Pretty Vulgar The Feathers Mascara

Eyeshadow: Novina Collection Volume 1

Lips: Elf liquid Lip in Red Vixen

Setting Spray: ABH Dewy Set

The Pacifica foundation I am going to try to use more frequently for a little while as it is about three quarters empty and I would really like to use it up. It is a good foundation, but i’ve had it for a while and would like to use it up and clear it out. It is definitely a repurchase item though so even when I do use it up it will only be temporarily gone from my dressing table. I just don’t like wasting products by letting them sit around long enough to expire. So it will make frequent appearances for a bit.

NARS is also a return from yesterday and will be reused for a bit as well. I actually hit pan on it yesterday. Just a tiny bit of silver was showing. It made me very excited as I have been working on using this sample size up for quite a while now. Today more of the pan is showing. I think the product is thin enough that the pan showing will grow quite rapidly. So I am going to see if I can use it up in the next few weeks.

Today I used the Illamasqua cream highlighter. It is in the same shade as one of my favorite powder highlighters from Illamasqua. I am kind of on the fence about it. I am going to have to use it more than once to really get a feel for it. It applied very brightly but then blended in more than I expected. I think I might have blended it out of existence. I’ll play around with it a bit more but I think I might prefer the powder version of this highlighter.

I do really like the Floss Lip and Cheek Stain as a blush though. I found it east to work with and I think it would be very easy to travel with as well. I don’t know if it is because I am getting older and my skin is changing or if products are changing or if it is a combination of the two, but I am really starting to like cream products a lot more. Well some cream products, and only in certain ways. This product I like on my cheeks but I am not a fan of it on my lips.

Mor my lips I used one of my favorite reds. It is a liquid lip from elf. It dries down well but comfortably and stays in place all day. And the shade works for me. It isn’t too pink and it isn’t too orange. which is really hard to find.

The Norvina Palette is one I will also have to play around with for a bit.It is highly pigmented but blends well. The darker shades have a bit of fall out. I didn’t really use any shimmers today. I do like that there is a pure white matte in the palette. I was very impressed by how white it was and how it didn’t go muddy with the other shadows. i think I will enjoy playing around with this palette. As I have a long stretch of mostly working at my desk coming up, I might try to play around with some brighter looks. It could be fun to try something new.

And that is more or less me today. It isn’t all that exciting I suppose, but at least it isn’t all that stressful either. It is just me catching up on paperwork and having a little bit of fun along the way. And there is nothing wrong with that on a wednesday.

The Daily: August 3rd, 2021

Good afternoon my darlings. I hope your tuesday is going well. I am beginning to realize just how much being without the internet for two days affected my schedule. It was a long day yesterday and it will be a long day today. With luck if I put in a long day today then tomorrow will be less long and Thursday will see everything back on track.

Storing items on the cloud is nice, until there is no internet and you can’t get to the cloud to retrieve them. Fun stuff.

Again as today is mostly going to be a working at the desk sort of day, I Did my workout early, showered and then put my hair up. I went for two braids on the top of my head today wrapped around themselves and stuck in with bobby pins. I think over all it turned out well. The earrings are another Ear Fleek pair. I believe they were from the Minimalist category.

Today is not terribly exciting I’m afraid just the gym followed by a day of paperwork, so I went for a fairly simple look.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Benefit Cosmetics Porefessional Primer

Foundation: Pacifica Alight Clean Foundation

Bronzer: NARS Bronzer in Laguna

Blush: bareMinerals Bounce and Blur Blush in Mauve Sunrise

Highlighter: Illamasqua Beyond Powder in OMG

Powder: ABH Setting Powder

Eyeshadow: Ciate London The Trend Edit

Mascara: Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir

Lips: MAC in Bated Breath

Setting Spray ABH Dewy set

The Pacifica Alight foundation is about three quarters of the way empty at this point so I may keep it in frequent Rotation so that I can use it up. This is a beautiful foundation though and one that I will repurchase. I just have had it for a while and want to use it up. It is a good drug store brand and one I have no problem purchasing.

dry brush for the shimmer

As you may remember the NARS bronzer that I have is a sample size and one that I have been trying to use up. I like the bronzer but I refuse to purchase the full size until I have actually used up the sample size. I feel that using it up before purchase of a full size does two things. The first is that it doesn’t waste the product. The second is that it lets me know that it is a product I am willing to use to the point of using it up. So I know if I purchase a full size it will get used. And today, I actually hit pan in the bronzer. Not a lot of pan, just a little silver glimmer. But it does prove that my plan to use it up is working.

I don’t know why that makes me happy, but it really does.

The bareMinerals blush is one of my favorite formulas and as small as this sample is, and as often as I actually reach for it, I have yet to hit pan on it. It too will be purchased in the full size once the sample is used up.

I actually meant to reach for the Illamasqua cream highlighter today when I put my makeup on, but completely forgot and picked up the powder instead. Tomorrow, I will compare it to the powder. I managed to remember Illamasqua, just not cream instead of powder.

For my eyes I used the Ciate London Trend Edit Palette. I like how the colors blend and it is a great formula, but I do find myself wishing they had one deeper brown in the palette. The one that is deeper, has a reddish tint to it. I almost reached for my ELF Bite sized palette for a deeper brown, but decided not to. The mattes in this palette are great for a one and done look, but the mattes are similar enough that they just sort of blend into each other when used together. The shimmers are stunning though. I used a dry brush to tone it down but with a wet one the shimmers really pack a punch. I just want one darker matte to really make this palette sing. Otherwise I really like it.

The ABH Powder was a little on the powdery side today and I did pair it with the ABH Dewy set to counter act it, which seemed to work well. Otherwise I like the ABH powder. Plus it had a large amount of powder in the container so finding a way to work with it is key to using it all up. While i will continue using this powder, I don’t think I would repurchase it. This is going to be a product that I work hard to use up and then do not repurchase.

As opposed to my Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara. That I will always repurchase.

So that is today’s look. Me and my braids are now taking a deep dive into editing a document. That’s right soon every comma will be in place and the sentences that seem to stretch on for paragraphs will be broken up into smaller sentences that don’t make readers lose their breath. I’m actually working with an engineer who seems to specialize in creating sentences that take up three inches of space on a page. I always get out of breath reading it. But soon all will be well. I just need to get back to it. I hope the rest of your day is fabulous.
