Trying out the Cover Girl Aqua Smooth Foundation

For the last few years my in person shopping has dwindled considerably. Truth be told I wasn’t doing a lot of in person shopping, but when the would went a little crazy, I limited myself to groceries and the occasional Target run. Everything else was more or less done on line. And there it more or less stayed.

While there is nothing wrong with that I do miss strolling through the drug store and getting inspired or simply interested in what is there. Recently I found myself in a drug store and spent a little while strolling and reveling in just seeing the products available. While I could have easily filled a basket with things I wanted to try, I did attempt to limit myself (my budget appreciates my lack of routine drug store visits even if I miss them.).

one of the things I decided to try was the Covergirl Aqua Smooth makeup + titanium Dioxide Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 20. On the package it clams to be “a solid makeup that transforms into liquid for smooth coverage.”

bare face

It is in essence, a cream foundation with sunscreen mixed in. For me SPF 20 isn’t enough and I do have my regular sunscreen layered with my skincare prior to applying makeup so I wouldn’t wear this on it’s own and expect it to provide me with the sun protection my skin needs. However I don’t mind a little bit of makeup back up to my skincare or my sunscreen.

As you can see in the package the product comes with a little foam applicator. I’ll be honest, I tried to use it but I have never had any luck with those little foam rectangle applicators so I rolled in a makeup sponge. While I typically prefer a makeup sponge with an angle, this foundation worked best with just your typical rounded makeup sponge. The one I used was actually the Luxie Makeuep sponge (the set is actually on sale at the moment if you are looking to stock up on some good quality makeup sponges). It had a good solid density to the sponge. There were a couple that were just too light and squishy to work well. While I really liked the Luxie sponge for this, look for a firmer makeup sponge as it makes application a lot easier.

half foundation, half not, this was a no primer try on and you can see why it needs a primer

Normally I also use a makeup brush and then touch up with the makeup sponge but this is not a brush friendly formula. I’ll go into that a little bit more in a moment, but essentially you are going to want a firm makeup sponge with this foundation.

The Aqua Smooth applied really well actually. I wouldn’t say it turned from a solid into a liquid like an alchemical trick, but the cream formula did melt into the skin for really good coverage. If used without a primer, it did tend to sink into the fine lines and pores. I definitely needed a primer underneath.

Interestingly, which primer I used mattered a lot with this foundation. I don’t know if it was the sunscreen or the potential solid to liquid formula, but if I didn’t use a gripping primer, the foundation never really settled. It continued to be movable. I don’t mean that it went off to lunch on it’s own leaving me bare faced, but when I went in with powdered products using brushes to apply them, the brushes for powder products would always streak the foundation and lave brush marks. Going back in with a sponge fixed them,. but it was still there. It also meant I needed brighter powder products because the sponge always took off a little bit of the powder.

just the full face of foundation

I had better luck with cream face products, but even with a finger application, the foundation could move a bit and leave some spots of less coverage.

All of this was easily remedied by a gripping primer. I went with the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, because let’s face it if the Milk Makeup Hydro grip can’t grip it, it isn’t staying in place. With the gripping primer underneath it stayed beautifully. I still preferred to use cream products over it as the cream products sort of melted into the foundation to give a better natural sort of look.

this isn’t a foundation I would wear for a formal and really dramatic look. This is the sort of foundation i would go for when heading out to a barbeque or picnic. It is an more natural everyday foundation. The added sunscreen makes it good for the out of doors as well. there is a slight sunscreen scent to it, but it is very light. I did find that it also wasn’t the sort of foundation to sweat off easily. which for me was a bonus.

complete look

the one concern I have is that it is not a long wear foundation. You can get about four to six hours of wear before it starts to sink into fine lines. I especially had trouble around my mouth. I also needed to pat it down with pressed powder after a few hours (2-3) because I was getting a bit of shine. If you go for the dewy look it shouldn’t bother you. I’m just not a dewy look sort of person. Over all I would say this is a decent foundation to wear to a casual out door event or to put on when you need to look good for a meeting in a hurry. It is very quick to apply. Just remember to use a gripping primer and pair it with cream products and it will look beautiful for four to six hours. As my in person meetings rarely last more than two, I most certainly have a place for the Covergirl Aqua Smooth Foundation in my collection even if it will never make my favorites list.

The Daily: September 8th, 2022

Oh my. Today has been a day where the phone simply did not stop ringing. It started ringing with my first cup of coffee. It rang as soon as I hung up and then of course it started beeping while I was talking to let me know that someone else was calling while I was on the phone talking.

Apparently there was some kind of rule about calling me before lunch. I’m not sure why there was a lunchtime deadline, but once the clock struck noon the phone calmed down. Maybe everyone went out to lunch and isn’t back yet. I keep glancing over to the phone wondering why it is not ringing anymore, even though I am glad to have a bit of a break. it threw my system off a bit but I am slowly getting back on track. Admittedly at lunch I had to reconfigure the schedule.

Once I shifted projects to have them complete before I left I started rolling them out. A few started going out last Friday with more going out this week. Apparently that was going to be gone at the end of the month and to find all sorts of things they thought I needed to talk about before I left. A lot of it is to schedule projects for when i return.

As we are entering the busy season it is understandable but it seems like everyone checked their schedule and freaked out at the same time. I think part of it might be that I will be leaving on September 23rd and not returning until October 9th or 10th. It caused people to flip the calendar page so to speak and while the holidays seem pretty far from September they start arriving in October.

And yes I consider Halloween the kick off to the holidays. In fact it is my favorite of them if I am honest. Anyway, I did manage my makeup before Chicken Little decided the sky was falling so let’s take the lull to go over it.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Face Primer

Foundation: CoverGirl Aquasmooth Foundation + sunscreen

Bronzer: Trestique Bronzer stick

Blush: Dominique Cosmetics Cream Silk Blush

Eyeshadow: Colourpop Blowin Smoke

Brows: iMethod Beauty Eyebrow Stamp Kit

Mascara: Milk Makeup Rise Mascara

Lips: About Face Matte in Take Aim

Okay today I specifically chose the Ole Henriksen primer to pair with the Cover Girl. First off I loe the primer and it does nice things for my skin. Second I wanted to try this with an illuminating primer. Yesterday I used this foundation with a really gripping prime and it turned out well. Today, the foundation was back to slipping a little as I applied everything else. I think that with the sunscreen this foundation formula needs a really gripping primer. It looks good but it was harder to work with since gripping isn’t the banana bright’s main function.

I did go light on the bronze and blush. Because the foundation was moving more, I I applied the face products and they moved the foundation a bit, so I had to go back in with the foundation over the bronzer and blush. it worked, but it was more trouble than it had to be. I like this foundation, it just needs to be worn with a primer that really locks it into place.

Today was the last day of the Milk Makeup Mascara. I was actually scraping bottom to apply it. The tube is now officially empty. A full size will be purchased as soon as I look over the current mascaras I have. I know about three of them need to be tossed and I have several waiting in the wings. The evaluation will be soon. (Mostly because I want it done before I leave so i will probably start that as I decide what makeup to pack to take with me.)

I still love the Blowin Smoke palette. however I want to reach for the same shadows to do a specific look and found myself forcing myself to try different ones. I went with the balck sparkle and the silver today. The silver is lovely (although I got a bit crazy because I was hurried between calls) and the shimmery black doesn’t really shimmer. It is also a little more powdery than the regular black. I suspect i will just reach for the regular black in the future. I like this palette and I like having it in my collection, but I know i am going to reach for it for a specific look.

Today I used the About Face Lip paint. I love the color and I love that the painted tip makes it easy to apply. It does bleed a little into the fine lines around my lips, not majorly, but enough that I notice. I just need a lip liner to pair with it and I will be fine. It also dries down well and relatively quickly. So there isn’t a trail of lip prints left behind me,. It doesn’t dry down to desiccated parched lip level though which is nice. I did find that after a few hours though I was reaching for my lip balm. it is dry but not overly dry, but the lip balm didn’t hurt.

And so my darlings that is me. And the phone is ringing again so I will let you go. Have a great day.

The Daily: September 7th, 2022

Once again the rain is falling. But at least the temperatures are going down. My garden doesn’t quite know what is going on. Some of the plants didn’t flower this summer because it got too hot too quickly. Now they are flowering. I have an entire melon vine now covered with little yellow flowers and three small bulges indicating melons might be on the way. All summer long the vine grew and i watered it to keep it healthy, but no flowers.

I suspect October might be the month of cantaloupe this year.

Other than that today has been a day spent at the desk. I am still trying to clear out a lot of projects, but the work load is manageable at this point. I suspect that once i return I will have found several things that have fallen through the cracks. But I suppose that is more or less inevitable.

Today, perhaps because of the rain and the temperature drop, perhaps because I reached for a fall-ish toned lipstick, I was feeling autumn in my bones. I set the summer scented candles aside and dug out one of the few left over from last year and decided to light it. the house now smells of warming spiced like cardamom and cinnamon. the cooler temperatures are only in the 80s so it might be a bit over reaching, but it makes me happy and that is what counts.

And I’ll admit, part of my wishing fall would arrive is that I am very ready for this year to be over with. It has been a brutal year on so many levels and I am just so ready to put it all behind me. I really want the clean slate of a new year. I know I have far too much to get done before then, but it doesn’t stop me wanting it, hence the candle. And the searching of my favorite candle sites this weekend to see if any autumnal scents have been released. I know I can’t be the only one ready to move forward.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Milk Makeup Hydrogrip Primer

Foundation: Covergirl Aquasmooth foundation

Bronzer: Trestique Bronzing Stick

Blush: Illamasqua Gel Blusher

Eyeshadow: Colourpop Blowin Smoke

Eyebrows: iMethod eyebrow Stencil Kit

Mascara: Milk Makeup Rise Mascara

Lipstick: NARS Lipstick in Kirat

A lot of today’s makeup was dictated by the Covergirl foundation. It is a cream based foundation that not only applies better with a sponge, but really doesn’t like dealing with brushes. all brushes leave tracks on it so I used cream face products today. Actually I chose two of my favorites, the trestique bronzing stick and the Illamasqua gel blusher. Both i blended with my fingers because it was easiest.

The trestique was a little dark with this foundation and I should have gone in with a lighter touch, but it worked out okay in the end. This foundation is a light coverage foundation. There is a definite limit to it’s buildability. I went with the Milk Makeup Hydrogrip primer today because I really like the primer and because it is very gripping. And that is kind of what this foundation needs. I don’t know if it is because of the sunscreen in it or maybe the type of sunscreen in it, but this foundation had issues settling down yesterday. It kept wanting to move as I applied other things. With the hydrogrip underneath it worked so much better. It locked in place and I didn’t need the setting powder to keep it there, which made the look a little lighter.

I have to say i love the Blowin Smoke Palette. There is something about the grays and blacks that just appeal to me. I also have to say that this palette did inspire me to go ahead and order the Lime Crime Immortals palette. I’ve been eyeing it for a while and while it does have similar tones, it does had a little color to it. And as much as I love this palette, I kind of wanted one of the grays to have more of a purple undertone. It has a slight one but I just want to nudge it a little bit more. I suspect i will reach for this palette when i want a specific look because of the monochrome nature of it. however I am very glad I did purchase this because it is worth having in my collection. I also want to see how it compares with the Lime Crime but that will come later. either way this palette will be staying well after it’s testing phase.

And then we have the lips. This is a Nars Lip and I really love the formula. It is a traditional bullet lipstick, which after the mess of yesterdays liquid lip was somewhat reassuring. While I think this color is now discontinued, this is the third tube of this color I have owned. For a really long time this was my go to lip. i would wear a clear gloss to the office and then reach for this once the work day was done. I like the creamy formula of the nars lipstick and I love the pigmentation. It is something i always forget but need to remember. I really need to spend some time on the NARS website looking at lipsticks. But i always like reaching for this and the darker shadow palette gave me the excuse to do so. And yes I will be using it to reach for my darker lipsticks. I like the neutrals but I really move my deep shades.

And so that is me. And now it is back to work. It was a nice break but now I must return to paperwork and dreams of cool autumnal winds.
