While not a review, I thought it might be of interest to you to see what I am putting in my travel makeup bag and why. During my daily makeup posts I tend to rotate through makeup, but when I travel I tend to pick reliable products that can fit into a small makeup bag, especially when it is a weekend trip. While this isn’t exactly a fun getaway, it is travel. The only thing I left out of the makeup bag is mascara. The reason is that this trip is for a memorial service and there will be many tears shed. At the moment I have yet to pick up a waterproof mascara so I am leaving my mascara behind and will either pick up a waterproof mascara at the drug store or go without.
When traveling I generally find it a good idea to stick to products that don’t spill and I try to reduce the possible breakage component by sticking to cream products so they feature heavily in this bag.
This time I am starting with the Kristopher Buckle Triplicity Foundation stick. It has traveled with me for quite some time. It is my old reliable. I’m still not certain of the status of the company. I know that the main website shut down after massive sales and now it is available at walmart. It is a fantastic foundation, I just don’t know if it will be replaced once it runs out. I may actually scoop up one more for travel purposes because it is really hard to beat this stick formula. Plus I don’t have to worry about foundation bottles breaking. But if the company has gone under I won’t stock up, I’ll just work on finding a new travel fave.
The primer I am taking with me is the Tatcha Silk canvas Primer. It is a fantastic pore filling primer that locks in my makeup for as long as I end up wearing it. As I have no idea how long I will be in makeup this weekend I thought it would be a good product to choose.
I didn’t bother with a highlighter, but you may notice a tiny round pot with a gold lid and a pink bow on it. I know, it looks like an eye cream, however it is actually a sample size of the Ciate London Extraordinary powder. It came in an IPSY bag a while back and to be honest, I have refilled it a couple of times. For a weekend it is all the powder I need. I will be adding the powder puff from the Kim Chi Powder to my makeup bag to use with it.
For eyeshadow I am taking The Balm and The Beautiful Palette from The Balm. It is the one I’ve been playing with recently. I really like the formulas and the ease of application and it is a compact size that fits in the bag. So since it was already out, I went ahead and added it to the makeup bag. I will have the full review of the palette up next week, I simply didn’t get a chance to finish it this week.
I added a Marcelle eyebrow pencil because I like it and it has a spoolie on the end so I don’t have to worry about adding secondary brow products (like a brush) into the bag. And then we have the lips.
I’ll be honest, i don’t think I have ever traveled with just one lip product in my life. To this bag I added my favorite MAC neutral in Bated Breath. I also added a Trestique lip crayon in case I wanted a slightly darker product. I added the Yensa Lip oil in case I felt like shine, or only a glossy lip with no lipstick and I chose an assortment of lip pencils. Some match the lip products others stand alone. For this bag I chose, UOMA, Persona Cosmetics, Bodyography, Huda Beauty and Real Her. I figure they are all relatively neutral and all have slightly different formulas. I plan to choose whichever one appeals at the right moment. And more than anything I like having a variety of lip products to choose from. Oddly enough in out of control situations it can sometimes make me feel like I am in control by making a decisive decision as to what lip product to wear. As it is a weekend where I can control nothing and can only deal with whatever happens, having that one tiny bit of control, really does help me mentally balance. Even if having seven lip products in the bag does seem a little extra.
Sometimes it isn’t abut what you actually wear.
And so that my darlings, is the makeup bag I will be traveling with this weekend and why I chose the products included.
Good afternoon my darlings. I hope all is going well with you today. As for me, my hair is a bit poofy again and there were some makeup issues, but we’ll get to that.
The park was still flooded and the fitness was all indoors. I sweated it out to YouTube videos. As it was more yoga than cardio there was sweating but I felt more stretched out and limber rather than completely sweated out. I know it is good for me and keeping everything limber is a good thing for life both now and in the future but I really do prefer the long walks. It takes up a lot of time, but I can use the time to sort out issues in my head or plan things. When I do yoga the only thing I tend to think is ‘I don’t think my body moves quite like that.’
well maybe that isn’t the only thing. I’m afraid I often think very mean thoughts about the instructors. They are all just a little too perky. It makes me think they are hiding something. Like a love of torturing overweight women and not telling them that they are double jointed and are missing a few vital organs and bones us normal people need to survive. I know it is just my fat getting in the way of certain movements but sometimes the things they do …
But I got through it. I’m still hoping that this week will miraculously erase the damage a month of issues added to my weight, but I am trying to maintain the workout without going crazily overboard in compensation. And yes I am a bit worried about stepping back onto the scale to confront the damage. I’ll be less focused on it once I see the numbers and then I’ll just let it go and deal with the damage. sorry to fixate, but at least it is a temporary fixation.
Okay this turned out to be mostly about the primer so we will just blaze through the other products. Yensa,. Illamasqua and buxom preformed beautifully. The Illamasqua gel blusher is rapidly rising to the top of my list of fave products and I am thinking about getting additional colors so I can play with it year round. The Yensa foundation I’ve been testing and my full review will be up in the morning.
I really like the Blinc mascara although today I sneezed when it was still wet and had to deal with the fall out. But a sneeze at the wrong time can mess up any mascara. It still turned out well. It does more or less require a waterprroof eye makeup remover to remove completely, even if it isn’t the waterproof version, so be aware of that when you use it.
The Huda Beauty lip liner was a bit sticky but I ended up putting chapstick over it and that took the stickiness out. And I am now getting the hang of how much of the Kim Chi setting powder to apply to prevent a powdery look and now I love it.
I love the way The Balm shadows worked today and I like the eye look I cam e up with.
The Saint Luxe Highlighter is subtle and disappeared in the face of the primer. I think it needs to be an all over glow or paired with a natural look and a tinted moisturizer.
And so to the primer. Even though I recieved this a while back I never got around to trying it out. For a while it was primer- palooza with subscription boxes and I ended up with a lot of new ones to try, I have several actually that I still need to try out. I decided that since I knew how this foundation worked I’d try a new primer.
This primer is the Dewy Skin Primer from Ciate. First I should have tried it with an all matte foundation. Second, I think I might have applied too much, not only is it dewy to the point of greasy looking it feels heavy on the skin. One of the reasons I like serum foundations is that they feel feather light The Yensa is easy to forget that I am wearing. I felt this primer. Now it is a first use so that could be user error. I also need to check the base of the foundation and primer because they didn’t really want to work together at all. I haven’t had problems with this foundation, but today there were problems.
There was a little separation so I think the formulas might not be compatible. I am going to have to do some label reading. This looked very patchy and uneven up close. I’m not sure f that translates in the photos or if it is just an in person thing. Regardless, I did not like the result and after about an hour of wear I washed my face and spent the rest of the day au natural.
In general I like Ciate products so I don’t mind giving this one another chance. This is also why I tend to test products for at least a week before I decide if I like them or not. sometimes things don’t go so well with the first trial run. Today was not a good first use. However there is always tomorrow.. I’ll just need to spend a little time with the ingredients list before my next use of this primer.
And that was it for me today. Luckily the rest of the day is just me working alone at my desk while the rain pelts down outside. I’m thinking of using this as a face mask opportunity.
And again the rain is here. So workouts will be done in doors. I don’t mind the indoor workouts actually. However I have gotten used to the daily does of fresh air that a walk outside brings so I feel a little deprived on days when I only work out indoors. I also don’t think I burn quite as many calories. Which is entirely my fault of course. I need to expand my indoor workouts. Since the rain is no doubt going to continue for most of the day, I think I am going to sit down tonight and write out a list of exercises with both the ones I currently do and a while bunch that I don’t always do and then come up with a sort of ‘to do’ list for my work out tomorrow. I’ve fallen into the habit of using the same set routine and I think it needs to be shaken up a bit.
Beyond that I am just chugging along with the course of normal daily life. Since my babydoll had dental surgery last week we’ve been modifying the meals to avoid a lot of hard textures with crisp and crunch. It is a very strange way to think about food. I found this out this past summer after my own dental surgery. Normally I think of texture as something I add to a meal to make it more appealing, planning meals to avoid it is somewhat interesting and has thrown off my meal plans a bit. I will be very happy when he has healed enough that meals have a little more normality to them. And I don’t have to think about how crunchy something actually is before incorporating it into a dish. I think next week normality may resume. Fingers crossed as it is more dependent on my baby doll’s healing process than anything.
Today was an interesting one. I pulled the Too Faced Foundation from the depths of my drawer. I honestly forgot I had it. I also forgot how watermelon-y it smells. which I don’t mind, it was just surprising. I don’t know if Too Face Makes this foundation any more or not. The link above takes you to Too Faced’s foundation page, in case you were wondering. I don’t reach for this a lot because full coverage is not an everyday thing for me. That being said I do like how light weight this formula feels on the skin and the way it blends. With a foundation brush streaks will be left, however a makeup sponge will take them out. So have one handy. It does have a bit of a dewy finish so I use a matte primer (love my elf poreless putty) and powder off the shine.
My powder today was the Smashbox Photo Finish powder. I have a love hate relationship with this powder. The powder itself i like, and I kind of did the fresh shaved powder. But the dial is hard to turn and sticks a lot. If you have anything on your hands it is hard to grasp. I have had several nails break as my hands slipped while turning. while I don’t have mobility issues, I imagine that if you had any this would be a nightmare. Still the powder is good despite the packaging so I will keep it and use it until it is gone and then not repurchase. I just have to remember to reach for the powder often enough to use it up in the first place. I tend to shove it to the back of the drawer.
the bronzer and blush are standards and I love reaching for them. I will be cleaning up my dressing table tonight so they will go back in the drawer and not be out and easily available. It is the only way I can keep from automatically reaching for them and give other products a chance.
Because I just received the About Face Lip gloss I remembered the About Face Highlighter and used both today. while I still think the lip gloss looks a little cheap and like a Too Faced knock off, it performs better than I thought. I put it over the Uoma lip liner to give it more color as it blends to shine on it’s own. It is less sticky to wear than when I tested it on it’s own and I like the way it looks. I know, I didn’t expect much from it, but this lip gloss very much exceeded expectations. I can admit when I am wrong and I was wrong.
The highlighter is a nice golden shade of liquid highlighter. It blends well and looks good. It isn’t my favorite and I probably wouldn’t repurchase it, but it is a good highlighter.
I left off the lid primer today and tried for a softer look with the Huda palette. Today’s look came out a bit more springy than I thought it would but I like it. This is never going to be my favorite eyeshadow palette, but there are several shades I like that will make me keep it around.
The wet ‘n wild mascara I adore. it gives me length, it gives me volume and it is probably the least expensive mascara in my collection. It is just a fantastic mascara and I am happy that i replaced it. I feel like my lashes look fabulous today.
Oh today is not sunny. In fact it hasn’t been sunny all weekend. It has been raining off and on for three days actually and the odds of getting a walk in are slim to none. The park is flooded and with the rain coming down in waves the odds of just walking around the neighborhood for a bit aren’t good.
Its the sort of day that makes me think my activity of choice should be Ark Building.
I suspect that this week’s weight loss activity will involve closely monitoring calories going in rather then burning them off through exercise.
Speaking of calorie consumption though, one of my favorite snacks is having a one day sale. Today is the 9th birthday for Chomps so they are having a sale today only.
They are great on the go snacks and who doesn’t like getting a great product at a bit of a discount?
Today has been mostly conference calls and working at my computer, so I decided to take advantage of the time on my own to try out the YC liquid blushes that came in this month’s IPSY glam bag plus. The colors are a bit bright for me so trying them when I don’t have in person meetings seemed like a good idea.
Okay today I had a few new products to try so I basically went with products I know and like for the basics so that i didn’t have to worry about them. The Porefessional Primer is as always fabulous and a standard in my dressing table. The Elf Acne Fighting foundation is not only good but as I am working on clearing out the last of my breakouts it seemed like a good idea. Plus I like the way it looks. Again with the Ciate London Bronzer. It is still pretty new to me, but I really like the way it performs. It is buildable and blendable and rapidly becoming a bronzer I reach for automatically.
Now to the blush. I’ll be honest, the colors for these two kind of scared me a bit. One is a very orangey pink and the other is just orangey red. I had visions of clown makeup in my mind. They have doe foot applicators. I chose the darker reddish shade. I dotted two dos on each cheek and blended with my fingers. At first it came on clown makeup strong, then I blended it a little with my Huda Beauty Makeup sponge. and it mostly disappeared. I’ll be playing with this all week, but today it seemed to have two speeds. It was either bright clown spots or it vanished. Perhaps I didn’t put enough on, or I blended too harshly. I’ll work with it and see what I come up with throughout the week. Right now I am a bit on the fence about these blushes.
The milk and Honey palette i like thus far. I will be working with it this week too. I used the golden shade today and it blended well with my skin giving it a bit of a glow without looking like a stripe of shine. It blends well and I like it.
I chose the Huda Beauty Palette mostly because I was thinking about Huda Beauty today. I saw that Huda of Huda Beauty is going to be curating the next IPSY Glam Bag X (November). I was actually looking for details about October’s Glam Bag but there were fewer details. I think that may become a theme with IPSY. The glam bag has fallen into a bit of the Glam Bag X Shadow as they promote it. Which is nice if all you want is the quarterly bag. Hopefully with the price increase for the regular Glam Bag Plus going up ($28 instead of $25) next month they will pay more attention to it in the future. But that is a wait and see game.
I sort of forgot how pigmented the Huda Beauty Palette is so my eyes went very pink today. Luckily the Mischo Beauty Gloss is not very pigmented. It is a decent gloss. It isn’t sticky but the color is really very minimal.
I should talk about is the mascara before it is gone. I used the Pat McGrath Fetisheyes Mascara today. It is nearing the end of it’s life and will soon be removed from my dressing table. It is a good mascara. It is not my favorite though. Each time I use it I end up thinking, its good but not really worth the price. I like it, but as there are several other mascaras that I like better, some at comparable price points and others less expensive, once it is gone I won’t be repurchasing it. It is one of those mascaras that I will use if it is here and came in a subscription box, but wouldn’t purchase on my own.
To seal everything in I reached for the Milani Make it last matte setting spray. It is a good setting spray, although I don’t care for the scent. It is a bit on the perfume-y side. It does lock makeup in really well though. When using it, hold it a good distance from your face as it does have a powerful spray and if held too close it can leave traces in your powder and foundation. I ended up using my makeup sponge to kind of smooth out the setting spray effects today.
Over all it isn’t a bad look, I don’t think. I went a little heavier on the eyeshadow than I planned, but I can live with that. The blush will need a little more thinking about before i pass judgement. But judgement will come at the end of the week. For now, I need to get back to work as Monday paperwork is calling.
Good afternoon my darlings. I hope that you are having a wonderful Monday thus far. Today I managed to get my gym workout done, with a little extra. which was nice as I over indulged a little too much over the weekend. My babydoll heard a rumor that our favorite Mexican restaurant in town was struggling so he decided that a healthy salmon Friday and skipped happy hour treat meant a Mexican Feast on Saturday.
You know, for the economic support of the community.
It was actually an interesting eye opener. He ordered one of our favorite meals in it’s entirety to go, but forgot that we hadn’t ordered from their full menu in over a year. During lockdown they had a limited taco menu so we would occasionally pick that up. But this was the first full menu order in a while. The food was, as always a delicious treat. It was also far more food than we were used to seeing at the same time. He picked up the take out for an early lunch on Saturday.
we ate it for Saturday Lunch and then ate left overs for Saturday dinner, Sunday lunch and Sunday dinner. I think he might have actually finished the refried beans side with eggs this morning for breakfast. It was a lot of food. It was an interesting reminder of how my (and his) eating habits have changed. Prior I am pretty sure that we would have just gotten two meals out of what he picked up and then probably eaten salad of something light on Sunday. It was always more than either of us could eat in one sitting.
I knew we were eating less than we used to because I had to adjust grocery shopping somewhat. But a lot of the time I will still make the large meal and just freeze left overs for a second meal a little while later. So it doesn’t feel like we are eating a lot less. It is only by actually seeing what we used to order that it actually brought the changes home to me.
I’m really glad he did pick up the order. First of all because it was really good food. Second because I like supporting my favorite local restaurants. But third, because sometimes I actually need the reminder that there have been significant changes. Sometimes you need to step back and away from the day to day and look at the bigger picture to see the progress you are making. At least it helped me.
I still feel like I over indulged, but it was nice to see the changes.
Today was an interesting mix of my mood and things I am wanting to use up. First up is the Primer. I really love this primer from Urban Decay. It was, for a long time, my go to primer. I picked up this last one up a while ago and then started trying other primers. Then Urban Decay discontinued this primer. I’m trying to put it in the category of ‘needs to be used up’ but there is a part of my that wants to hold onto it for as long as I can. I know that is silly because it will eventually expire if I hold on to it, so I am having to force myself to put it into the must use up category. It is hard just because I know that when it it gone, it will just be gone.
The wet ‘n wild tinted hydrator I used because it is quick and easy and I really like the way it performs. I like the formula and I really like the weightless factor. It is a good product that I will repeatedly use and repurchase. The same goes for the elf bite sized palette. I really enjoy the formula and like the way it blends. It is simple and quick to use and consistently good. So I went for it today.
The NARS Bronzer in Laguna is one that I have been working on using up this year. Pan is now showing and the showing of the pan is steadily increasing. I want to use this up before the end of the year (or more accurately before the holiday sales go live) so I will be rotating it in often in order to do so. I find it surprising how excited I am to see the pan grow in this product. I think because for so long I would use it but only see a slight dent in the product, not any sign of pan. Now each use shows more pan. Somedays it is the small excitements that make you happy.
The Bare Minerals Bounce and Blur blush. What can I say that I haven’t already said? I love this blush. It is one of my favorite formulas and one that I will consistently use. It is quite fantastic. The color suits me. The formula is both blend-able and buildable and it lasts all day. What more can you really ask for in a blush?
Today I chose the Becca Pink Haze Setting powder and I have to say I am in a mixed state about this powder. I like it, but I know Becca is ceasing production. I’ve made my peace with other Becca products. even the Aqua foundation that I really like. I will use and let them go. This powder I keep going back and forth on. it is a really good setting powder and on days when I look a little wan from spending far too much time at the computer it gives a nice pink tone to my skin. It is especially fantastic in the winter time when I spend so much less time outside. Then it provides a healthy tint to the skin so I don’t look sickly with my winter pale. I keep looking for another pink powder to replace it. Specifically from a company that isn’t about to cease production, but I thus far haven’t found one that works quite as well as this. I have maybe a third of the container left of this powder and I am contemplating picking up another one just to extend the time I have to look for a replacement product. Part of me thinks I should just let it go. It is the last Becca product I won where this decision has to be made. Everything else I’ve just decided to let go. This I still need to think about for a while.
The lips were fun today. I have this Buxom lipstick that I love. And I do actually use it more often than I report. It is a plumping lipstick and I really love the way it works, but the shade tends to wash out my lips. So what i usually do is apply it before i start the rest of my makeup, let it do it’s plumping thing an then wipe it off after it stops tingling and use another lip product. I know, I should really just pick up another shade because in addition to plumping it is a really nice lipstick. And I will be picking up other shades. A friend of mine suggested using a creamy lip liner in a warmer shade around the edges and then using a brush to blend it inwards to make the lipstick keep from washing me out. I tried it with the Huda Beauty lip liner, but I think I waited a bit too long before blending so I got more of a line than I intended. I think I am going to try to play around with this trick because I think it could work. And I really like the lipstick and would like to wear it more often. So I may be playing around with that for a while.
I am sure I missed a few products but those are the makeup highlights for today. I hope everyone is having a fantastic Monday and is gearing up for a fabulous week.
Good afternoon my darlings. I hope your week is going swimmingly. I am still racing to meet my deadline, but I did manage the gym today for a short period of time. I cut it short because the gym was rather crowded today. While I could get all of the machines for my strength training, the treadmills were all occupied and I didn’t feel like hanging around until one came free. I think that I am going to try for an evening walk. I’ll still coat myself in sunscreen, but I’ll also add a layer of bug spray on top as the problem with walking in the evening is the mosquitos.
As soon as it looks like the sun might be going down, they come out in swarms.
But that will be a timing issue for later. Right now, I at least managed my scheduled workout. I also managed to clean up and get my makeup on. Because I’m planning on staying at my desk for the rest of the day I took the opportunity to let my hair stay down for a bit. At this point it is simply too hot to wear it down outside of the house. So since I am inside I took the opportunity to let it down. And yes, I really need to get to the salon and have a professional do some shaping at the very least. I had layers, they grew out. I tried putting a few layers in myself, it was a disaster. Thankfully those layers have now grown out. So A professional is needed. That will come in the fall. At the moment my ability to tie my hair up and out of the way is of more import than styling. Although you can’t really see them, today’s earrings are also from Mariz jewelry. They are the plain gold version of the sparkly fans I picked up from them. While i like the glitter, I kind of prefer the lower key look of the plain gold for everyday wear.
Everytime I use the Clarin primer I am reminded how much I really do like it. It isn’t one that seems to get a lot of hype, but I really like the way it feels and performs. I am about halfway through the container at this point. Very little is needed so it will last a while longer, but it is a definite repurchase item for me. if you are interested it is currently on sale at All Beauty.
The Ciate London Foundation is also in my top list of products. I’ve been using it a lot more lately partially because I love the formula and partially because the shade matches my summer skin better than many of my other products.
while I am still testing out the Billion Dollar Beauty Box and assorted products sent to me with it, I amd also testing out a set of Billion Dollar Beauty Brushes and I wanted to try them with the cream formula of my Trestique Bronzing stick. So that is the bronzer I chose, although it isn’t a hardship.
I am finding that the ABH Powder and Setting spray work well together. The Powder seems to lean a bit towards the powdery side of things, but the Dewyness of the setting spray balances it out to keep it from looking powdery. Tomorrow i might switch setting sprays to see if any setting spray counteracts it or if it is the Dewy part of the spray that balances. I’ll also have to pick a day and switch out powders to see if the spray is too dewy without the drier look powder. But those are experiments for another day. At the moment I am pretty pleased with how things came out. As I found the lipstick in the Billion Dollar Beauty a little too light for me, I used the Huda Beauty Lip Contour to help adjust the shade. As the liner is too dry on it’s own, covering it with the lipstick really works well. The color is altered and the lipstick keeps the liner from being too dry. I am really liking the combo.
Happy Monday my darlings. I hope you had a fabulous weekend. Personally I worked in the garden on saturday in air thick enough to chew. It was almost a relief when the rain came pouring out of the sky ending my gardening time. Of course working in the garden kind of zonked me out a bit. I sort of collapsed and ended up binge watching almost an entire season of Why Women Kill. I am almost through with Season 1. Season 2 was just posted. It is really hard not to go ahead and finish out season 1 and roll straight into season two. I am really enjoying the show.
Binge watching wasn’t exactly what I had planned for the weekend, but quite frankly a good collapse was probably what I needed. Rain and humidity sort of prevented anything from really happening outside the house so whatever outdoor chores didn’t get done Saturday morning just have to wait. It was kind of nice having that be out of my hands if I am honest. While I wouldn’t have minded getting the rest of my chores list knocked out, sometimes a break is necessary and I happily took one.
So this morning I was quite refreshed and ready to face the week. It was a rather nice feeling actually. I made it to the gym and ran through my work out. With the rain it is doubtful I will get a walk in today. Actually with the rain it is doubtful there will be any walking this week. It has been raining off and on for two days and so the park is no doubt flooded. More rain is expected throughout the week so I think I might just be popping into the gym for a little more walking time on the treadmill on my non gym days. if my schedule permits. We’ll have to see. But I’m hoping that will work.
Clarins is one of those brands that people don’t talk about nearly enough. I have tried several products from moisturizers to makeup from them and they have always been top notch. I love this primer. It really helps with blurring out pores and smoothing the face in preparation for foundation. It is pink in tone, which happens to suit my skin tone and it does feel very silicone-y which I kind of like. It is a really good primer and the red glass jar just makes it feel a little special when I reach for it.
The Ciate London Extraordinary Foundation is the perfect shade for my current skin tone. It blends in well and feels weightless. I will need a little powder blot mid afternoon in the t-zone, but the shine is actually quite minimal. I could probably get away with not blotting, but I also know i will blot.
To be honest the Pur Face Palette and the Feathers Mascara were out on my dressing table because I forgot to put them away so I went ahead and used them today. I happen to really like both so it wasn’t a hardship. In fact i think I will be reaching for this palette a lot during the summer as it really does work well for me.
The Huda Beauty Gold remastered is a really nice eyeshadow palette. While there are clearly a lot of rosy tones, I happen to be a big fan of the rosy tones. There is a bit of fall out from these shadows though, so either do your eyeshadow before your face makeup when using this or be prepared to sweep away the residue. Although you can build these colors up to look quite intense, I went with a lighter look today. I took the red shade Maneater for my crease. Then I topped the outer corner with the brown of Coco and added a little trust fund bronze to the inner corner. It isn’t super crazy but it suited me.
Finally my lip was the colourpop matte in Tulle. I really like this shade actually andshifted it to a visible position so I will use it more. Today I tried the trick of not going all the way to the corners of my lips with the dark shade. Not going all the way to your lips corners is supposed to prevent you from looking like you are frowning with the darker colors. I think I like how it turned out, but I think it is something I am going to have to play around with. I may be spending some times with red lips as I work on this and go for a more neutral eyeshadow look. Bit for now, I think this worked pretty well.
Over the weekend I had a nice rest and Monday seems to be sliding along well. Over all it looks like a fabulous start to what I am sure will be an excellent week. I hope your monday is chugging along in a fantastic way as well.
Good Afternoon my darlings and I hope you are doing well. I think I finally managed to sort things out with scheduling and will actually be able to roll into Friday with a lot less stress and the ability to have a regular week next week. I think that having a three day weekend, coupled with the fact that June has begun and that means the year is technically almost half over sort of threw a lot of things into a tail spin. People started evaluating projects and adjusting time lines like crazy.
Also I think a lot of the people I work with are now back to working in their offices rather than at home and they are finding themselves somehow less productive than they were working from home. I actually spoke to someone today who estimates their productivity is actually almost down by half. Part of that is that in addition to getting ready for the office in the morning, she has an hour long commute each way, plus all of the things that being physically in an office entails eating into her productivity.
It was a rather eye opening conversation actually.
But that is not the point. The point is that things seem to be settling down a bit for me and soon normality will resume. Actually it is sort of resuming now.
So woo hoo for me.
Today I did manage to go on one walk. The air felt thick enough to take a might of, but it wasn’t overly warm. There is the terrible sense of waiting though. The clouds are heavy and low, the air wet enough to wring and yet no rain. Or at least no rain yet. A minute or two ago I heard the rumblings of thunder so perhaps rain is imminent. I suspect there will be no possibility of a late afternoon walk.
I’ll manage to struggle along with out it.
Yesterday, I managed to get to the gym in the late afternoon and for future reference, that was a mistake. It was packed. I much prefer my off hours morning visits and will happily return to my normal schedule. It didn’t help that there were a lot of people who weren’t exactly wiping down the machines after use so I had to wipe off the ones I used before and after working out. I have to say even before covid, it really annoyed me when people did that and now my annoyance is just shared by more people. There was a kind of angry vibe in the gym.
But at least I learned something about my own schedule.
I forgot how much of a grip the Huda Beauty Primer has. It fell to the bottom of the drawer and the fact that is hads dark packaging meant that it hid out in the shadows while other products were used. Sometimes it is a good thing to rummage down to the bottom of the drawers. The Huda Beauty Primer does a little blurring, but it’s main function is to lock makeup in, which it does very well.
The other face and lip products I chose because they work well and i didn’t really have to think about them. I was still spending most of my get ready time playing with the eyeshadows. The close up of the eye is one that didn’t make it into my earlier Too Faced Melted Chocolate Eye shadow review. I did take this look off and fix it, but I wanted to include this photo to show both how messy the liquid shadow is when using a finger to apply it versus a brush and because I applied the powder over the melted chocolate before the liquid was dried down so the brown over it looks quite patchy. I fixed it, but I thought you might like to see some of the mistakes.
Over all, the drama of the morning is over and this afternoon is relatively peaceful. Tonight I am planning on watching another episode of Tell Me a Story. It is a paramount plus original and I am hooked. I am trying to space out the watching of them rather than bingeing them because it is a new series and there aren’t that many episodes. It is so hard to be good though. I think I’m going to start alternating them with the new Why Women Kill which looks good. Has anyone seen that yet?
I don’t know how many of you have Paramount Plus or who are looking into it, but their prices are getting ready to change. I think they change on June 6th. If you sign up before then you can lock in your current deal. Just something to think about if it is something you were looking at. We’ve been rotating our streaming sites, getting rid of the ones we don’t watch and adding in new ones to try out. I’ve had Paramount plus about a month now and it seems like a keeper. Just a heads up on upcoming changes for those looking into it.
As most of you know by now, I love lip products. Even pairing down the products to my makeup bag every week I usually can’t help but add several to the bag so that I have a selection to choose from. Occasionally, like with the Trestique mini lip crayons, I just take the entire collection with me into the bathroom and just pick a different one each day. Occasionally two, as I blend them together.
While fun for me, it often means that with my makeup bag posts the lips often are just jumbled into a small section and don’t get the space they deserve. Why should foundation always take a single post space while they have to huddle into one review? Why should the eyes always have it?
And since this week I am using up the last of a previously reviewed foundation it is time for the lips to have their moment in the spotlight.
This week while I did again choose several products to use on my lips, I chose one to spotlight on its own. I’m going to try to remember to do this more often so that each lippie has its moment.
As we all know, I love a bold lip. Color wise, this did not disappoint. It is a deep rich wine color when applied. There are of course other shades in the line. I clearly have not tested them all, but I would guess they have similarly intense pigmentation. The Demi Matte is nice as it provides a shine to the lips so they aren’t matte, but it is not super glossy. I actually like both glossy and matte lips actually but I tend to like my darker shades matte and my lighter shades glossy.
I have no idea why that is, but if you look through my lipsticks, that is the overarching trend. Even though this is a darker lip, it is not too glossy for me. I like the shine but don’t think it is too much.
The applicator is a doe foot and I have to say, I really like the shape of it. There is a slight curve to the applicator and it really helps with applying the liquid lip. When you get a dark liquid lip, there is always the issue with crazy messy application. (As you can see if you look left, I needed to straighten out my lines let I do an Elvis like curled lip all day.) At least with me. Or maybe I have messy application with all my lip products and it just shows more with the darker color. Either way, the shape of the applicator’s doe foot really let me control the application and not get super messy with it.
The product went on really dark and somewhat thick. I always blot my lips with a tissue before leaving the bathroom, a habit given to me along with my very first lipstick. It is also one I am not likely to break any time soon. If I were going out and not eating or drinking and not wearing a mask I would touch up the edges so that it was neater and not blot as much so I could retain the color more. Maybe not blot if applied just before a photo.
Then blot after the photo. I do love this color.
But I knew without blotting my coffee cup would look like a murder scene. And it would have gotten all over my teeth, no question. The tissue took off the excess product and I have to say I really like the color post blot. I prefer the wine dark of the pre blot, but I did like the post blot color as well.
Also, for this test, since I was only testing the lipstick on it’s own, I did not use a lip liner. Any other time I wore the lipstick, I added a liner, because this one really needs it. I highly recommend using a lip liner for this one to clean up the edges.
While the liquid lip is comfortable to wear, it does not disappear from your mental screen. There are some lipsticks I can put on and then completely forget I am wearing until I pass by a mirror. This is not one of those. I always knew I was wearing a lip product. I don’t mind that, but it is something to be aware of it you prefer that it feels like you aren’t wearing anything.
The reason it does not mentally disappear is that the product never fully dries down. It always stays slightly damp throughout the day. While this does mean that you feel it on your lips and you will leave lip prints behind, it does have a benefit.
It does not cause your lips to dry out. Because it never fully dries down it does not dry your lips out. In the winter, my lips get dried out a lot on their own, I do not need assistance from my lipstick. Plus, I tend to like darker colors in colder months, which makes this a pretty perfect match for me over the winter.
While it doesn’t dry down, it isn’t a sticky formula. You can roll your lips together and they still feel moist, but they don’t stick together as they do with many glosses. I have never tried a full on glossy lip product from Huda, so I don’t know if their liquid lips do that, but many do and this demi matte did not.
Scattered throughout this post are photos taken of my lips (and coffee cup) throughout the day. The first one was taken of the rim of my coffee mug as I took a sip five minutes after applying the lipstick. The second coffee mug picture was taken fifteen minutes after the first. Because it doesn’t dry down, there will be lip prints. They are contained by mostly just drinking from one spot on the cup so you have just one lip print. (and yes for this I wiped the rim of the mug off just to see what was still being left behind fifteen minutes later.)
While the color did fade over the course of the day, by the end of the day I still had a reasonable amount of product still on my lips. In case you are wondering there was a full ten hours between first application and the photo taken at the end of the day. The after lunch photo was taken in my office where I have a lot of natural light, the start and end of the day photos were both taken in my powder room where the light is the same throughout the day.
I did not reapply the product on the day the pictures were taken and at the end of the day I was still happy with the intensity of the color. Quite frankly I was absolutely thrilled with this liquid lipstick and how it performed. On the upper lip it did bleed a little into the edges of the fine lines when applies with no lip liner. With a lip liner, there was no bleeding into the fine lines. I should also point out that while it is noticeable with these close up photos, I didn’t see it until I zoomed in on the photos. The seep into fine lines is not really noticeable in real life.
As one aside, on the day I wore this, the one time I went out with a mask, I wore a black mask (because I didn’t think about it). While I am certain some lipstick got on the inside of the mask, the product itself wasn’t smeared around on my lips. And the mask was black so I couldn’t tell what product got on it. I also only had the mask on for half an hour, maybe forty-five minutes. Most of the time when I am wearing masks I tend to go with products that dry down completely. I hadn’t anticipated going out with a mask on the day I was testing this , but it didn’t cause trouble. If wearing a mask all day, I would probably not suggest this lipstick, just because it doesn’t dry down all the way.
In the photo below I put the first of the day (post blot) next to the end of the day photo so you can get a better gauge of the color change. The color is clearly faded and the edges are a bit less distinct. This is easily corrected with a lip liner and I highly recommend using a lip liner with this lipstick. The lip liner keeps the edges crisp. I am actually going to pick up a lip liner in a matching shade. I’m hoping that by getting a Bawse lip liner (if there is one) I can keep the initial wine dark color by putting it under the lipstick even if I do blot the lip. (I’ll let you know if my plan works with an update). But even without the color, you need the lip liner to neaten the edges of the top lip.
Otherwise, I was thrilled with this liquid lip and will be looking into picking up more from the demi-matte line. And probably looking into their matte lips as well. When looking up the product info for this post and copying down the links I saw the matte Heartbreaker and had an instant craving. And I’ve never tested the matte lipsticks from Huda Beauty. Perhaps a future post…
Good morning my darlings. I know some of you are looking at this and thinking, it is not Friday. No you did not miss two days. This Thursday is Thanksgiving for me and I will not be posting on either Thursday or Friday. Don’t worry, normality will resume on Monday. Or whatever passes for normality these days. So no one is missing days and today we will have the Wednesday Face Mask as well. It will also be earlier in the day as this afternoon will be filled with the pre-feast arrangements and the first of the Thanksgiving Video chats with family.
It turns out not everyone wants to be on the same video call. I think I have some family who are deciding that the benefit of not gathering en masse for the holiday is that they can choose who they want to talk to. Kinda fun.
But this is less family drama highlights and more of the week’s make up.
This week for foundation I went with the Maybelline Fit me Matte + Poreless. I really like the foundation. My thoughts haven’t really changed on it since my full review. It is one of the better drug store foundations that I have tried out. However there is an improvement.
My one issue with this foundation was the open top to the glass bottle. I dispense product onto my hand and then apply and with this I am always pouring just a little too much so I feel like I am wasting product. Then when I was poking around I found the Fit Me foundation is now on sale on Look Fantastics website ($8 in case you are interested) in a tube instead of a bottle. I know, normally I adore glass bottles but without a pump or dropper or anything, I make a mess with this bottle. Now it is offered in a tube. (Yes it is things like this that get me excited. Last time I checked my local drugstore only had it in the bottles but on my next store run I will check it out. If not, at least I know where I can replace it and eliminate the one complaint I had about this product. Happy holidays to me.
Applying my foundation was the tag team duo of my Master Blender from bdellium tools and my Huda Beauty sponge. I am still loving both of them.
Bdellium Tools is having a sale where a lot of their Vegan Brushes are 50% off. If you are looking for quality brushes this might be a good time to stock up. Of course, Huda Beauty is also having a sale.
This week’s primer was the Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer (Usually the full size is $36 but right now it is on sale for $18). I used to use this all the time. I think the only reason I stopped picking it up was because I had too many primers at one point and decided to try and use them up before I repurchased. Somehow this fell off my radar.
A week or so ago I was getting a few Ulta gift cards for …well…gifts, and I saw this travel sized one in the section by the checkout so I picked it up to see if I still liked it. I do. I like it a lot. It is pore filling and my skin looked fabulous when I put it on. I can’t believe I let this fall off my radar for so long and will happily be putting it back into my primer rotation.
It is an adorable little sample. Which is probably a good thing. As cute as it is, it did not perform as I remembered. It worked really well on covering spots and blemishes, but under the eyes it was a mess. It crinkled, it wrinkled and every person I saw thought I looked exhausted. I don’t know if the formula changed or if I am just old enough now that my skin no longer likes the formula, but it didn’t work for me. I will use the rest of this little tube as either eyelid primer or a spot concealer, but it is not going under my eyes. I love many products from Tarte and their sister brand Sugar Crush (Especially their liquid lipsticks), this just doesn’t happen to be one of them anymore.
For blush and bronzer this week I went with two of my long standing favorites. What doesn’t show is that there are significant curves in the product of both the bronzer and the blush. The bronzer was from Marc Jacobs.
Technically it is the HI FI Filter contour duo, but the darker contour I can use as bronzer and the lighter shade I tend to use as a powder when I accidentally pick up a foundation that is slightly too dark. I am not always the best at picking out shades so I have products to help modify some of them. I figure it is better to modify than to waste an entire bottle of product (assuming the product works well). It also really helps when my skin is seasonally transitioning. This is a duo I will be keeping around until the pan is completely empty. And then I’ll reorder something similar. I don’t think this actual duo is sold any more but the products are sold individually. I just don’t think people are doing as much contouring as they used to.But the formula is great and I will be going for a Marc Jacobs Bronzer when this runs out rather than the contour kit.
The blush was the Gold Rush from Benefit. What can I say, I love the blush, I love the slight glow it gives my skin and I also really like the way it makes me look on video calls, which I will be doing a lot of this week. It may be family and not work, but I still want to look nice.
For highlighter I grabbed the Fenty beauty (30% off sale going on now) and used the Moscow Mule more than ginger binge as it suits my skin tone more. I wanted something that would blend out well without being to in your face bright. While I occasionally tease about the overly highlighted nose, my family is merciless with the mocking so I wanted to avoid bright spot but still highlight certain areas. This highlighter worked well so I shouldn’t have any problems on the video calls.
I had two powders this week. My pressed powder is the No 7 Perfect light in medium. As you can see from the photo, the pan has started to show through. I may actually keep it in my makeup bag until I have used it up rather than trading it out with another one in the dressing table.
The kicker is that since I reach for this one automatically (it is one of my favorites) I have several other pressed powders I’ve barely touched so I might do a quick count and see if I can justify reordering this immediately or if I will have to show some restraint and wait for a bit. I would prefer not to show restraint but we will see what the powder count reveals.
My loose powder this week was the Smashbox Photo Finish Fresh setting powder. It came in my November Boxy Charm and was actually one of my choice items. I was intrigued by the dial that shaves off fresh powder for each use. I thought it would help keep it from getting messy. Which it does. The powder is really nice and I do like using it. The only issue is that when you turn the dial for the powder you have to have clean dry hands.
If you have anything on your hands (moisturizer, serum, primer) turning that dial becomes a feat requiring herculean effort. Otherwise it is fine. Just remember clean, dry hands and you will be fine. I am kind of interested to see what will happen as the level of powder drops. While it may take me a really long time to get through eyeshadow or blush, I go through powders (both pressed and loose) at a fairly steady rate. They are the one item I am always replacing. Even on no makeup days, I use powder over my moisturizer. Seeing how this solid performs as it gets shaved down further and further may be an interesting thing to watch.
This week I couldn’t resist reaching for my wet ‘n wild Color Icon Palette. I have the My Glamour Squad one, but in all fairness it is a good enough formula that I would not mind picking up more of these little palettes (currently the 32 pan Color Icon palette which looks like it has all of the small pans combined is on sale for $9.99 – normally it is $15- I am very tempted by this.). There is enough shadow for a variety of looks and the formula is easy to work with. If you are just getting into makeup or like to keep things easy, this is not a bad little palette to have around. The shades tend to fade after about the tenth hour of wearing them, but it is rare for me to wear shadow more than 8-10 hours so I’ve never found that to be a problem.
And since I was taking out the wet ‘n wild eyeshadow I figured I’d go ahead and grab the ultimate brow kit. I really like the wet ‘n wild formula. Well for the brow powder. That cream highlight is just awful, but the powder is really good. I only use the one lighter shade. While the kit is really very inexpensive, I feel like I am wasting the other two products. I would love to just get that lighter powder in a single for my brows. I think for now I might try using the darker shade as a powder eyeliner so it doesn’t get wasted.
For eyeliner this week I used the Laura Geller Line and Define Dual Dimension eyeliner. One is a crayon style and the other is liquid. I really like both formulas but I think that the crayon side will just get thicker and thicker as I use it down. It will be interesting to see how that wears.
This week as I was attempting to put things where they belong in my dressing table I found an unopened Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir mascara (they have both the regular packaging available now and a special Holiday packaging of this mascara as well as several kits where it comes in a travel size like this. You all know my weakness for kits and multi-product packs).
I’m not ashamed to say I squealed just a little bit with delight. For a while I had a fist full of these sample sized mascaras and I thought I used them up. But no, this one was still sealed. So I promptly unsealed it and used it, and yes, it is just as good as I remember it being. So I was a very happy camper when I found I had that.
I have used all three before, loved all three and will use all three again. The Ofra formula is a really nice one that dries down to stay in place but doesn’t dry down so much that your lips feel parched. It is a very comfortable formula to wear and a great nude. The thrive lipgloss is lip gloss shiny and not as glittery a it looks. It is also not sticky. The stick factor is one reason I tend to go matte and then just top it off with the few clear glosses I like. This is one of the few I really like.
And finally we come to the setting spray, Milani’s Make it last Matte (Milani has 30% off site wide at the moment). I liked this spray actually. After the paint fumes of Kokie I was braced for the worst but I ended up really liking this. It has a slightly floral scent to it that fades quickly and more importantly didn’t give me a headache.
I think this is one I would definitely use until it is gone and then think about repurchasing in the full size. So that my darlings was the makeup bag for the week. It sounds very strange to be saying that on a Wednesday, but such are the holidays. I will be wearing these products for the rest of the week, with the exception of the tarte concealer. I am now using the Pretty Vulgar concealer under my eyes as I don’t want to explain to every family member that I am not sick and exhausted. That was my only real fail this week.
Which shouldn’t be surprising as I specifically chose products I knew I could count on for the week since I was going to be so taken over with other things that I didn’t want to have to stop and evaluate my foundation, eyeshadow or powder mid gathering. While there were a couple of new items, for the most part I went with products I knew I could count on. It was just one of those weeks where stable was better than experimenting. I tried to add in as much information about brand’s sales as I could with the posts and hopefully it will help some of you out. More than likely I will be doing a second sales post later today as there were a bunch that I forgot on my massive sales cheat cheat that I posted yesterday. And of course there will be a face mask post later today as well. And no, it is not Friday. You really haven’t missed any days.
