The Daily: October 28th, 2021

Today has been a nice and calm day if I am completely honest. The weathermen threatened rain, but we have sunny skies and cool temps. Walking this morning was fantastic. It was actually one of those mornings where you forget that you are walking for exercise and just walk because it is just beautiful weather to walk around in.

Which quite frankly is the best way to get exercise in my opinion.

As I’ve worked at my desk today the laundry has chugged along in the background. By tonight I will not only have all clean clothes but the sheets will be freshly laundered as well. There is just something absolutely delightful in that first sleep on clean sheets.

Not that I let them get filthy, but I change the sheets once a week. That first night with the clean sheets always feels glorious. Also since it is cool and dry out, I hauled the comforter out into the sunshine to get a bit of air so the bedroom will smell extra fresh when it is time to turn out the lights.

Somedays it is the little things.

Even though this did take a little bit of time out of my day, I decided it was worth it. Plus I got up early and plan to work late tonight actually. I’ve also worked late the last couple of nights as I get things sorted. Not only is the month ending (which always makes things a bit busy, but the rest of the year is slowly dribbling away.

Well, not so slowly at this point.

As November is about to hit I am looking back over the things I’ve tried this year, making lists of my favorites and trying to pull together a list of products I sampled and want to try out in the full size. I’m going to have to weigh the list against the items I have waiting to try out, but I will share the lists with you. In addition to my normal posts I have some getting ready for the holidays posts coming out as the season of gift buying and personal restocking occurs. As the sales have already started I know that doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone. For me the next few weeks will be an eplosion of consumerism. While there is more travel this year a large percentage of Christmas items need to be mailed.

Which means they need to be purchased and wrapped so they can be mailed out in plenty of time to reach their destinations. with the postal service already being somewhat overwhelmed I want to give my items plenty of time to get to their destinations.

So soon a shopping we will go.

Today’s Look:

Primer: Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer

  • palette madness still going on 50% off many fabulous palettes

Foundation: No 7 Lift and Luminate Triple Action Serum Foundation

Bronzer: Too Faced Cocoa Contour Palette

Blush and Highlight: Doucce Posh Powder Palette

Powder: Becca Pink Haze

Eyeshadow: Little Briar Rose Palette from Storybook Cosmetics

Mascara: Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara

Lips: M2U liquid lip

First things first, I have to say I feel a distinct sense of pride. Today I finished the Urban Decay primer. It was a great primer and I loved it, but it has been discontinued so I wanted to use it up and send it on it’s way. And now I have. So long, fare well. I loved you while you were here but now must let you go.

The No. 7 Foundation is one of my favorite drugstore Foundations. There are a couple that I like actually, but this one really tops the list of them. The serum formula really blends into the skin beautifully and as it is suitable for sensitive skin it causes no problems. I always feel like my skin looks extra nice when I put this foundation on. It has a kind of glowy aspect without being a dewy kind of product. It just makes me feel like I have good lighting.

The Too Faced contour palette is an old favorite that I am trying to remember to reach for more often. I like it and I like having the variety of tones, especially at this time of year. My skin is altering tone as my summer tan fdes so playing around with shades sometimes helps me out.

I went with the Doucce palette as well today as it was quick and easy. I am really starting to like this palette. I decluttered the magnetic palette from the brand a while ago because I never reached for it and the shadow shades weren’t ones I reached for. I find myself using all thre of these blushes and all three of the highlights. This palette hasn’t been in my collection long but it is starting to grow on me.

Like the Urban Decay Primer, the Becca Powder has been discontinued. I won’t concentrate as hard on using it up as I did with the primer (I was more worried that one would expire) but it will make frequent trips to my daily look as I work through it. Clearly once it is done it will be gone. I do want to find a new pink toned setting powder that I like as much though. I think that might be my quest for the new year. It seems each year there is one makeup item I go hunting to find. Sometimes I find it, other times I get distracted. we’ll see how this one turns out.

Today I took out the Briar Rose palette from Storybook cosmetics. I don’t reach for this palette enough. The reason is that because it is so bulky I store it in the back of the drawer and forget about it. I need to find a different place for it because every time I use it I realize how much I like it. The colors all suit me and I am very much drawn to them. But the palette format, while lovely to look at is so bulky. I need to maybe use it as a table top decoration so I will reach for it more. Because I really like the shades. I actually thought about ordering more palettes from them to make a little display. Plus i like the formula. I just haven’t gotten around to looking at them. But I do need to reach for these shadows more. I love the color story of the palette and I really like how well the shadows blend. it is a really good palette, especially for me.

The Marc Jacobs mascara is always one of my favorites. Sadly it too is being discontinued. Currently the Marc Jacobs website has it at half price. I have been making an effort not to stock up on discontinued products but with this mascara it is hard. It has been my absolute favorite for a really long time. There are other mascaras that I like, but this has just been at the to f my list for a really long time and I hate to see it go. I may have to actually break my no stocking rule. I am going to try to resist though.

The M2U liquid lip is growing on me actually. The color seemed perfect with the shadows today, but i really like the formula. It is super comfortable to wear and doesn’t dry out my lips or leave lip prints everywhere. It takes a little while to dry down and it never dries down completely, but if you give it five minutes then there will be no lip prints and it will stay in place with out making your lips feel dry. This is definitely a formula I am going to have to look at more and think about picking up more shades.

Over all i am pretty happy with my look today. It is a good work look and feels comfortable enough to wear all day long. Admittedly after my walk the only place I’ve gone is to and from the laundry room, but I like to think that the fresh sheets appreciate the look as well. And even if they don’t, I’m happy with it and that is what counts.

The Skincare Line up: May 28th, 2021

The full line up from this week

Oh my darlings do we have some changes this week. Most of the changes are in the night time line up actually. This week i have three separate empties going to the bin and replacements on the way. In addition I have a new element to add to the line up. so let’s get started.

The day time players

Daytime Skin Care

Deodorant: Native Powder and Cotton Deodorant

Cleanser: La Roche Posay Toleriane Purifying Foam Cleanser

Toning Essence: Byroe Bitter Greens Toning Essence

Serum: Peach and Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum

Eye Cream: Elemis Pro-Collagen Eye Revive Mask

Moisturizer: Farsali Rose Gold Elixir Moisturizing Gel Cream

Sunscreen: Volition Prismatic Luminizing Shield in SPF 50

Okay let’s just go down the line with the day time skin care. We’ll start with the Native Deodorant. If you’ve been following along with my posts, or just have a basic understanding of seasons in North America, you know that the temperatures have been climbing. what little spring we had disappeared in a puff of humidity. At least where I live. I started using the Native Deodorant Last fall and decided to wear it (in various scents) for an entire year. At first, I had huge circles of sweat under my arms. Then my body adjusted and the sweat stains grew less. To be honest, when I am working out or going on a walk, especially in warmer weather, the stains don’t bother me because I am often sweating so much that the entire shirt is uniformly soaked so it doesn’t stand out. It did however keep the odor down, which is what it is supposed to do. while this isn’t a problem, I have noticed that as the world heats up, I sweat standing still. I don’t mind seat marks on gym clothes, I do mind them on work clothes. I really like the native, but I have noticed some sweat stains on the underarms of my work blouses when I have to be outside in them. So I think that when I know I have to be in nicer clothes and may be sweating, I will be rolling in my long standing favorite Dove Antiperspirant to pinch hit, and just save the Native Deodorant for my regular use. I just don’t want to go from my house to meetings elsewhere and arrive with sweaty armpits. I really like Native and I will keep with it, but for when it counts, I’m falling back on my antiperspirant.

The Laroche Posay Cleanser and the Byroe Essence have been with me for several months now. Both are chugging along, their levels slowly dropping as I work on using them. The La Roche Posay Cleanser is one of my absolute favorites. It is so gentle and yet very effective. Plus you only need one pump so it lasts a really long time. I am about half way through the large pump bottle at this point and I think I am almost two and a half months into using it.

The Byroe is nice and I love the way the essence opens up my skin readying it to receive other skin care. I am still in the middle of a deep dive into it’s ingredients but that post will be coming soon. For now I love the way it works and I love the clean fresh scent.

This week my serum changed. Itis the first week with the Peach and Lily Glas Skin Refining serum. Thus far it reals really nice on my skin. As time goes on I will be able to see it’s efficacy, but for now feels nice about covers it. The serum is clear and two pumps covers my face and neck. I am trying to remember to bring my serums down the neck so that all of my skin can feel the benefits.

The Elemis Pro-Collagen Eye Revive Mask I am actually in love with. o little is actually needed. i dip a little plastic spatula into the jelly like cream and what sticks to the spatual is more than enough for my eyes. I also put it on the fine lines around my mouth and it seems to be helping them a lot as well.

But then I don’t think I’ve actually tried an elemis product that I didn’t like.

The Farsali Rose Gold Elixir gel Moisturizer is new this week as well, and thus far, I’m not really sold on it. It smells very nice. It has the same scent as the rest of their Rose Gold line. It is a very wet formula. It is wetter than any gel cream I’ve tried and it is even wetter than most water creams. It comes with a little plastic spatula, but the cream really slides off of it. In addition to being very wet, it takes a really long time to absorb. While I still want to give it a fair shot, I think I may end up using it as a night moisturizer instead of a day one because the length of time it needs to absorb has really slowed down my morning. I have to wait a really long time before putting on my sunscreen and I think there were even a couple of days where I forgot my sunscreen in the bathroom and had to use the spray sunscreen i used for my body on my face because I couldn’t remember if i went back to put it on. While i don’t mind doubling up on sunscreen, I do like to know I put it on.

My sunscreen this week was my standard volition and as always, it performs beautifully.

Shall we move into the night?

The Night time Line up

Night time Skincare

Makeup Remover:  CBD Superfood Dual Cleansing Oil from Yensa

Cleanser: La Roche Posay Toleriane Purifying Foam Cleanser

Toner Akar Skin Balance Toning Mist (End of Week 7)

Serum: Peach and Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum

Eye Cream: Elemis Pro-Collagen Eye Revive Mask

Moisturizer: Farsali Rose Gold Elixir Moisturizing Gel Cream

Neck serum: Dermelect Self Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum

Lips: Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask (in Maple) – this week I didn’t use a lip scrub.

Night Mask: Bloom Effects Royal Tulip Nectar Night Mask

Clearly there are some holdovers from the daytime crew at night and I won’t go into them again here. They perform pretty much the same at night as they do in the day.

This week I finished both the CBD Superfood Cleansing Oil from Yensa and the Akar Skin Balancing Toning Mist. i don’t know if it shows in the above photo but both bottles are empty and will be going to the recycling bin this week. While i liked using both of them and wouldn’t mind using them again, i don’t feel the need to run out and repurchase them. I would use them again, but neither was in my absolute favorites category.

My Dermelect Self Esteem Serum is a little more than half way empty at this point and I am nervously watching the levels. This serum works really well with my neck and is especially nice as my weight fluxuates. As I lose weight, my neck skin gets loose and then I plateau and the skin shrinks back and then the process is repeated. The Dermelect helps the shrinking back process go faster.

I am now a third of the way through the Agave Lip Mask from Bite Beauty. I love this mask. It is thick when you put it on, but by morning it has absorbed and my lips feel great. It takes so little product as well that the tube seems to last forever.

And finally in the night time list there is the Bloom Effects Royal Tulip Nectar Sleeping mask. The scent of this mask is utterly delicious. It is slightly floral, slightly apple-y and slightly spicy. It goes on thick and you will go to bed looking like a glazed doughnut. I highly recommend putting it on about half an hour before you lay down, otherwise your pillow case will sort of stick to you. But ive it half an hour and it absorbs in enough not to stick to the pillow case. It is still early days with theis sleeping mask, but at the moment I am loving it.

One item that will be providing a new category for both day and nighttime skin care is the Dior Capture Total Super Potent eye serum. It is designed to be worn under eye cream as an extra serum for the eyes. It was sent to me by Influenster for the purpose of review. It came in yesterday’s mail and I will be adding it to the skincare routine tonight when I get ready for bed. So next week there will be an eye serum category added. However as I have now finished my toner, I will be using the Byroe toning essence with both the day and night line up so there won’t be a big increase in products. Admittedly I still need to make a decision about the Farsali Moisturizer. I’ll make that decision this afternoon.

Tuesday and thursday nights and Sunday evening

In other Skincare…

Versed Press Restart Gentle Retinol Serum

Earth Harbor Marina Biome Brightening Ampule

Herbivore Prism AHA + BHA Glow Facial

Go-to Skin Care Face Hero Facial Oil

The Versed Retinol followed by the Marina Oil have been my Tuesday and thursday exfoliation duo for a while now. The Versed is nice and twice a week is about all I want to use it. It has thus far not produced any sun sensitivity and I really like using it. The Marina Biome Brightening Ambule, I can’t say that I have seen much effect from. It is a nice oil, but to be honest i probably won’t be replacing it.

Last Friday I opened the Herbivore Prism mask and when I used it my skin felt softer and silkier. It is recommended that it be used once or twice a week for results to set in. And that it be followed with a facial oil. I will be using this Herbivore mask every Sunday for a while in order to see if there are any cumulative benefits beyond, ‘Oh my skin feels soft’ which is what I got from the first use. We’ll see if over time, it produces more results. I paired it with the Go-to Skincare Face Hero because I’ve used the oil before and like how my skin reacts to it. I also felt that pairing a known oil with an unknown mask might help with my evaluation as to which does what. Since the Marina Oil is now empty, I will just go ahead and use the Go -to Oil with the Versed Press Restart instead of opening another oil.

So that my darlings is the skin care line up for this week. Some good, some not so good and some now journeying to the empties bin to make room for others. As I’ll at least need an oil or cleansing balm to take off today’s makeup, I’ll pick out any additions and replacements this afternoon so that tonight everything is set for the upcoming week.

I know this post was a bit long as I can go drone on about skin care for long stretches of time. If you made it through to the end, congrats. And thanks for sticking with me. I’ll see you back here this afternoon for the Friday Face Mask. Until then I hope you have a glorious Friday.

The Daily: November 4th, 2020

Yesterday’s bike ride really did me in. The sun was shining, the air was cold as it whipped past me. The two balanced actually making me feel it was the perfect temperature. Well, except for my hands. They were half frozen by the time I got home. I also didn’t realize how large the connecting path has become.

This summer my walking trail and park received an extension. I took the extension with my bike. Apparently the extension connects my little walking trail to another park (which was quite delightful to find out) and then that park is connected to another park, which is in turn connected to a third park. At least according to the map I checked when I got back home. It’s part of a plan to have a walking/biking trail that pretty much lets you go from one end of the state to the other. I only explored up to the second park before coming home.

However by the time I did head home, my rear end was numb from the bike seat, my hands were frozen and the light was fading. It wasn’t evening, but it was edging into gloaming territory.

I love that word – gloaming. In my opinion it doesn’t get enough use.

The thing about bike riding, at least for me, as long as I am moseying along on my bike, I can mosey for a long time. I am not a racer. I am the bike riding equivalent of a Sunday Driver. Go ahead and speed past me, cause I only have the one speed. But I can keep that one speed up for a really long time.

My problem comes when I stop and actually get off the bike. Then I am stiff and sore. Yesterday I was more preoccupied with my numb rear end and my frozen hands to take too much notice of any soreness elsewhere. But boy did it make its presence felt this morning. I hobbled out of bed this morning, found out that it may be Friday before all the votes are counted and the election is finally over which sort of made me feel like the rest of the world was groaning along with me, and then hobbled to the coffee pot.

I’m good once I get going because after a few steps my body stays in motion despite internal protests. But like my bike riding once I stop, I feel it. Then I don’t want to get in motion again. I did drink significant less coffee today as once I was settled in my desk chair I didn’t want to get back up again for refills. Also when I did get up I tried to see how many other things I could do while I was up and moving around. As the front of my thighs seem to be the most sore, the restroom has been my least favorite place today. I can flop into my desk chair if I have to. it is padded and has a back to it. The commode, not padded and no back. My arms did a lot of lowering and lifting today. I’m calling that my upper body work out for the day. I’m also going to have to remember to wear a watch next time I take my bike out. It is far too easy for me to lose track of time.

But at least I can say I got in a good workout.

Foil Packet First Impressions

a selection of foil packets from my skincare drawer

I have a strange relationship with foil packets. I never consciously pick them up. They always seem to come as a gift with purchase, or a bonus item in a subscription box. They get touched into packages and sometimes arrive unannounced.

And I always think, okay, I’ve got to try that and see if it is worth giving it a full trial, either with a larger sample or a full sized bottle. Oh yes, there have been foil packets that completely sold me on the full size before. It is rare though. Usually with foil packets I don’t try to determine whether or not I would purchase a full size but rather would I be willing to try it again.

It has a much lower threshold.

But what happens with foil packets, is I gather them, thinking I need to try them and then they languish until I go to pull something out of a drawer and then they come cascading out like a strange skin care slot machine. Because I honestly don’t reach for them a lot. when going through samples and testing them out, I gather up the small tubes and tiny jars and work through them. I tend to completely forget about the foil packets. Luckily there are no bells and flashing lights when they slide out and remind me they are there.

So I decided that I would take a selection of foil packets partially because there are a lot of them and partially because Black Friday and Cyber Monday are coming and I want to start making my lists. If I don’t try the sample, I can’t know if i want to pick up the product. In addition to products I like and want to try, there are also lists of gifts for Christmas and unlike me, who was sensible enough to be born in June, most of my family was born between November and February.

I don’t mind actually as it makes my birthday THE event of the summer while everyone else is just a part of the celebratory series that starts November 3rd and ends February 12 leaving everyone gasping with relief when Valentine’s day hits and we have quiet until Easter.

But it also means that I make birthday lists around the same time I make Christmas lists. It also means that even though I talk about my list the most, the items I want tend to take a back seat on my shopping extravaganza and sometimes have to wait for the spring sales.

Such is life.

But sometimes, I make it through the list and still get to shop for me. So i still make the list. But enough chatter, it’s time to sample.

The links below will take you to the product page for the company. I get absolutely nothing if you click on them. They are not affiliate links. I just want you to be able to find the products if you are interested.

Snowberry Serum

First up is the Youth Renewing Face serum with eProlex. from Snowberry. I believe the sample came as an added bonus in a Glossy Box. The serum comes out as a clear liquid and even though it looks like it is more serum that I usually use on my face each morning, the packet contained just enough for my face, neck and upper chest.

Snowberry Serum in hand

It took a little while to soak in, but I have been spoiled by the Hyaluronic Acid Serum from Timeless Skincare. That tends to soak into the skin on contact. I started the Vitamin C Serum trial (also a Timeless Skincare) this week and even that had a noticeably slower absorption rate. I think I might have just gotten used to the HA Serum’s speed. Either way it took only a little longer absorb. Since on the back of the packet Snowberry recommends waiting five minutes before continuing with other skin care, that’s what I did. (and yes I set the timer.)

I also used the five minutes to set up the coffee pot.

It absorbed before the five minutes, but as I occupied myself I didn’t mind the wait. In five minutes it was completely absorbed. while the serum is clear it is not odorless. The scent is faint and not unpleasant. I just can’t identify it. When I try to describe it I want to say that is smells like a soft gray streaked with light pink. I know sometimes my brain is not terribly helpful. It is a clean and pleasant sort of smell though. I checked the ingredients list, which they thoughtfully provided on the back. while I am happy there are Niacinamides, which my skin loves (although I know some people have a sensitivity to)there was no ingredient where I could say HA that’s what i am smelling. So for now I have to say that my broken snifter and bent brain translates the scent into a soft gray streaked with light pink. It is however a product that, after my initial test I would like to see more of so I will be putting it on the list to try again in a larger sample or even a full size.

High Expectations oil

The next two items were also extras added to a Glossy Box I believe. they are both from High SkinCare. One is the High Expectations Facial Oil and the other is the High Five Cannabis Facial moisturizer. Oddly they both had the same slightly lemony scent to them rather than the more typically earthy scent I associate with Cannabis/CBD oil based products.

oil in hand

The facial oil is 32% cannabis sativa oil. There was far more in the packet than I actually needed for one application, so I did not use it all. There wasn’t enough to add to a container to try and use a second time. Or maybe there was but I didn’t really feel like using it a second time. This oil felt a little heavy on my skin. At the moment I am using Pure 100% Squalane oil from Timeless Skincare in the mornings and the Malin+Goetz Recovery Oil at night. neither sit quite as heavy on the skin. The High Expectations did not meet, let alone exceed expectations in this first impressions test. I do not think I will be adding it onto any list.

High Five Moisturizer

However, I would consider picking up the High Five Cannabis Facial Moisturizer for a longer trial. It has 20% Cannabis Sativa seed oil and the same lemony scent that the facial oil has. (I know some of you are thinking – at least she said lemony instead of yellow, but lemony doesn’t ping in my brain as yellow it usually comes across as a pale green, so ha. Plus I am familiar with the scent of lemons.)

moisturizer in hand

The High Five cream absorbed well into the skin and was quite moisturizing. Again there was far more in the packet than could be used in one sitting. This I did add to a small jar and use at night. Because of its consistency, I really liked using it at night. It is as thick as a traditional moisturizer (as opposed to a gel or water cream). Even though the temperature has dropped, the sun is still bright and I spent longer on the walking trail than I have in a while. This was a very good cream after too much time in the sun. Unlike the oil, I would definitely consider picking up a larger size to try out.

Next there is the First and Free CBD Cream. It came in a Pinch Me Box. I have to say I was very glad to see it as they always seem to want to send me bandages and candy. And yes I looked over my profile with them but somehow I have gotten into some sort of candy eating klutz category. So it was kind of fabulous to be offered any sort of body lotion. The First and Free CBD uses canopy growth for their products which if I remember correctly is more sustainable. I can’t remember the details. I have only just started delving into the CBD world and my research is still a little shaky. As I just started trying out a CBD Cleansing oil, I will be doing more research soon. I would also do more research on the effects of using only canopy growth should I try out a larger version of this cream or any other product from the First and Free Brand.

CBD Cream in hand

As I really liked this cream, I think that is definitely a possibility. There was little to no scent to it. It smelled like lotion. Just that cream scent that unscented lotions have. As almost every lotion in my currently large collection is pretty heavily scented, this was kind of a relief. Lately I’ve been running around smelling of cake batter and sugar cookies. It’s made me want to bake more. But that could also be the cooler temps. Regardless, I would actually like to try using this cream for a longer trial to see how I liked it over a longer period and if I would like to add it to my continue to purchase list of products. As a note, when you go to the First and Free Site they will ask for your location so they can determine which products they could ship to you. Which i kind of like. I’d hate to accidentally buy something that wasn’t legal in my locale. The company does sell edibles though and I think the restrictions are more on that end then on the body lotion.

So there you have it, four foil packets and my initial impressions of the products within. Three I want to try further and one I definitely do not. Not a bad trial run. I hope you’ve enjoyed my foil packet first impressions.
