Unboxing the March 2022 Glossy Box

It’s here! One of my favorite subscription boxes. Glossy Box. It’s coming in quite late this month, but I am happy to have it whenever it comes in. It is a $21 subscription box, but you can get it lowered if you sign up for a longer subscription term (I am on an annual plan and Pay $18 per month and I have never regretted going to the annual plan). If you want to try it out you can get your first box for $16 with the code WONDER16.

In addition to their regular monthly boxes they also have limited edition boxes that come out periodically (I think they are quarterly but I’m not entirely certain). They have the new reimagined Easter Egg coming out soon. If you are a member you can order starting at Noon (EST) on March 29th and if you aren’t a member then sales start March 30th. These always sell out amazingly fast so if you are interested, set your calendars. There are 10 items in this year’s Limited Edition Easter Egg (I think there were only 8 items last year).

That is a reminder for me as well. i always forget the day they go live and then when I check back in they are sold out. I’m hopeful that this is my year.

But on to the March Glossy Box!

I love the way this is packaged. I know packaging isn’t everything but there is something just special about opening the box and seeing the ribbon and tissue paper. It makes it feel like a gift or an event to open it.

Admittedly this time the tissue paper had a hard time containing the first item in the box. In fact the box had a hard time containing the first item in the box. It is a full sized moisturizer, specifically the Farm X Super Green Cooling Gel. It is packed with vitamins and antioxidants and is designed to be a light weight moisturizer. As the weather warms up light weight moisturizers are going to be more and more my go to products so it is good timing. It is listed as being from a new range, but as I’ve neve heard of the brand before I’m going to have to look up specifics when I start to use it. I will say that I love the glass jar that the moisturizer comes in and with a retail of $37 it more than covers the cost of the box.

Next up there is a full sized hand cream from Merci Handy. it retails for $7. Photographing it was interesting because the silver swirl just reflected light back at the camera. There are a bunch of different scents. My scent is called Unicorn. I’ve never sniffed a unicorn before but apparently they smell like almonds and shea butter. I would have thought they smelled a bit more like Horse, but I suppose you learn something new every day. It is a nice scent and it is the perfect size to keep in my purse. At the moment i have no more small sized hand creams. I have actually gone through my entire stock pile. So it is very nice to have one for the purse. Plus I really like the smell of almonds.

The third item this month is a four pan eyeshadow palette from Estate Cosmetics. It is a full sized eyeshadow Quad with a value of $14. I’ve tried a blush from Estate and really liked the formula. The shade was too pink for me but it was an excellent formula. I have never tried their eyeshadows though so this will be fun to play with. There were different variations you could get and I am quite happy with mine, and the lavender shade does look very springtime.

Continuing on there is another makeup item, and it is the Model Co Highlighting shimmer whip. It is a full sized liquid highlighter with a value of $20. I have only tried lipsticks from ModelCo so I am looking forward to giving this liquid highlighter a go.

And finally last, but certainly not least is the fifth item in the box. It is a full sized Luxie tapered blending brush (value $15). While the one pictured in the brochure is the 205 I received the 504 Large angled brush -I’m not mad and it’s value is actually$21 on the Luxie Site. I love Luxie brushes. They are one of my go to brush sets actually. And I have had mine for quite a while and with repeated washings (over a couple of years) a few of them are looking like I might need to replace them soon. So having a new Luxie Brush arrive is just fantastic.

I don’t know if you noticed the trend in this box, but each item this moth was full sized. Normally, there are one or two items that are full sized. And while I generally list the retail value of the full sized items I tend not to list the sample sized prices. Mostly because sometimes you can’t actually buy the samples so I feel the sample price is an estimate. This time I can actually tell you the full value of the items i received is $93. Which is over four times as much as the Glossy Box cost. (More for me since i only pay $18 with an annual subscription). For me, this was an excellent month for Glossy Box. We received skincare, we received makeup and there is also a Luxie brush. Personally I am over the moon about the Luxie Brush. Although everything else is fabulous too. I can’t wait to see what they come out with in April.

Look Fantastic December 2021 Beauty Box Unboxing

Oh yes, my darlings, it is the week of unboxing. while this usually does happen in a month, all of the subscriptions arriving at the same time, it seems especially fun to me that it is happening the week before Christmas. It’s like extra presents. That I bought myself.

But it is fun to unbox them.

Look Fantastic is one that I especially enjoy. This month I have to say I didn’t see any spoilers, mostly because it was so crazy that I didn’t even have time to think about looking, let along go and actually look. So let’s see what surprises we have in store this month shall we?

The first item is from Elemis. Do I have to say I love Elemis? I feel I say it pretty much every time it appears in the box. Or in my weekly skincare line up. They are just a good reliable (if somewhat pricy) brand. This month we have the Pro Collagen Energizing Marine Cleanser (currently this is on sale at Lovely Skin should you be interested in picking it up for less than the usual price.) Oddly enough I just finished up a moisturizer from this line. I took it home with me at thanksgiving. It was a fantastic day cream. I hope that I will like this cleanser as much as I liked the day cream. If so, I will be very happy.

The second item in this months box was the Starskin VIP Revitalizing Luxury Gold Foil Eye Masks. I’ve tried Starskin products before and liked them and I absolutely adore eye masks. I don’t know if I’ve tried foil masks before. But I am willing to give them a go. Hopefully they will turn out well and I will have another brand of eye masks to think about adding to my collection. I go through a lot of eye masks.

While Look Fantastic does tend to lean heavily into skin care, there were two makeup items in this month’s box. The first is a blush from Lottie London. I am actually really pleased to get this product actually. A while ago I received a Lottie London Bronzer in a subscription box. It performed really well, but the artificial coconut scent of the product made me want to avoid it. I wanted to try something else from the brand to see if all of their products were so heavily scented or if it was just that particular one. And if the non-scented products worked as well as the scented one. I just hadn’t gotten around to it yet. I did take a second to sniff the blush and there was no scent. The color is a bit bright but hopefully that will be able to be blended into something more wearable for me.

The second makeup item I am also thrilled to receive. It is the Spotlight stick highlighting crayon from Eyeko. Eyeko is generally my go to brand when I do wear eyeliner. When I wore it regularly, Eyeko was really the only eyeliner I used. I wear eyeliner a lot less and since I tend to think of the brand as only fabulous eyeliner I don’t think of them that often. I would love to find more products from them that I do like, if only to stop thinking of them as the eyeliner company.

The last two items in the box are both in the category of tools. At least that is how I would classify them. The first is the Hollywood Browzer, which is a dermaplanning tool. I actually use the ones from Favy and I have been loving them actually. I am happy to try out a different brand though and see how they compare. It is a tool I use and am happy to try out.

The final tool is a Satin Sleeping mask from Glov. I actually sleep with a sleeping mask every night. I am an extremely light sleeper and changes in light as cars go by the house actually wake me up. So for me a sleep mask is essential if I am to get any sleep at all. Not all masks are created equal though. In general I prefer an adjustable strap on my sleeping masks. I also tend to go with silk over satin, just because I prefer the feel. However I do have a couple of satin ones. I have several other Glov products so I am familiar with the brand and happy to give them a try. And it is always nice to have an extra of an essential item floating around.

It’s one of the reasons I have two pairs of ThinOptics Reading glasses floating around. Some things you can streamline, other times it is best to have duplicates. Reading glasses and sleep masks always fall into the multiples category.

Look Fantastic is one of my favorite boxes. As with all boxes they have their good months and their not so great ones. Sometimes it isn’t a matter of good or bad, but of what i can use and what I’m going to pass along. This month I’ll use everything and that, quite honestly makes it a win for me.

Birchbox January 2021 Unboxing

This month Birchbox had quite the delay in shipping.  In addition to the current delays I believe one of their warehouses flooded. At least according to the e-mail I was sent.  I was also sent an e-mail saying that next month they will be shipping out between the 1st and the 10th which is their usual schedule, so hopefully their troubles are behind them.

For those that don’t know Birchbox is a beauty subscription that has five sample sized beauty products in the box per month. If you order month to month the cost is $15.  If you order for 6 months, then the price drops to $14 and if sign up for a full year then you can get the subscription for $13. I am currently signed up for a yearly subscription.

This was my first beauty subscription when I started with beauty boxes and I sort of have a soft spot for it.  I kept the subscription for a long time and then decided to take a break and move on to other subscriptions.  In November, they were offering a free Advent Calendar with an annual subscription so I decided to come back for a year to see if some of the issues that cause my dropping the subscription were addressed.

I know you are probably expecting me to complain about the small sizes of some of their samples, and I will admit that their samples can sometimes be laughably tiny.  Those are usually the more expensive products.  But truthfully that didn’t bother me as much as the moment of choice.

Each month on the 27th you can log in and make a choice for your box.  They do have a variety of options.  They have two curated boxes, one that features clean beauty options. There is the option to exchange your box for a preselected full sized item. You can choose one sample from a selection of options and know that that item will be in your box or you can decide that nothing in that month’s box interests you and thus instead of getting a box you can put your subscription price towards a purchase in their store.

One of the things that irked me about Birchbox was that no matter how early I logged in the full sized item was almost always sold out (I think I managed to catch it once and that was by accident), and usually at least one of the box selections was no longer an option. I found it very frustrating to expect a wide variety of choice options and end up with very limited ones.  Technically they send you e-mails letting you know choice is open, but if you wait to receive the e-mails then you will most likely find your options limited.  My e-mail always comes in around noon, but I found I can log in at nine. The system won’t let me in earlier than nine am.  On December 27th I made a deliberate effort to get in as soon as possible.

Which I did. I logged in at 9:02 am on choice day. And found that one of the boxes was already sold out as was the full sized item. The remaining box didn’t appeal to me so I chose an item from their list of selected. I chose the Verb Ghost Shampoo and Conditioner.  This apparently counted as two items out of my five.  While I really do want to try the Verb shampoo and conditioner, I find it a little off putting that the set counts as two items.

The tubes are 25 ml and I’m pretty sure I’ll get one hair wash with the set. I’m happy to get the chance to try the shampoo and conditioner and as they are used together I would be a little upset if I got one and not the other, but I think if the pair is going to count as two items, they should have at least had enough product for two washes.  But, regardless, I am looking forward to trying another product by Verb.

the spoolie end

My next item was from the brand Marcelle.  It is the Nano Eyebrow liner.  It is in a shade that I will use and I love that the pencil has a spoolie on it so that I don’t have to go looking for one when I use it.  Marcelle products are sometimes hit or miss for me, but the ones that hit I end up falling in love with while the misses are just kind of so so.  Their mascara is one of my favorite formulas actually. So I am happy to have this to try.

The next item in the box was the Dr. Botanicals Pomegranate Superfood Regenerating sleeping mask. I love pomegranate and I love sleeping masks so this hits right into my zone of products.  I have never tried anything from Dr. Botanicals and am happy to give them a try.  I am also pleased that it is a large enough sample that I can get at least a full week-long trial out of it before making a call on whether or not I like it enough to purchase a full size. I’m hoping I like it as the full size is only $12 which is really reasonable for a sleeping mask. Fingers crossed that it’s a good one.

And this brings us to out last item and it is the KNDR Luxury Hand Sanitizer.  A little over a year ago I would have been upset to see this in my beauty box but these days I go through so much of it that having an extra is not a bad idea.  I will say that I did open it and use it.  It is an aggressively floral scent.  A chokingly aggressive floral scent.  If you are going to use this hand sanitizer, use it in an open space.  I opened it in my office and initially thought that as the hand sanitizer did its job that the scent would fade.

It did not.

It lingered.

And made my eyes water.

The scent is very much like my grandmother’s linen closet sachet (the one stored for too long next to the mothballs so that the floral scent was a little off) was dipped in the sanitizer alcohol gel.  It is not pleasant and I had to air out my office.  I am putting this tube of hand sanitizer in the carport and will use it when I go get the mail, or move the trashcan around, but the carport is an indoor/outdoor space where the fresh air will blow the scent away. Do not use this in enclosed areas.  Even if you happen to like the scent, know that it is strong and it takes a long time to fade.  Anything this potent needs a lot of space to run around in.

with the rainbow prismatic paper inside

Now while those were all of the items in my box this month, this month Birchbox did a keepsake box and so instead of their usual cardboard boxes they had a clear plastic box.  Instead of their normal tissue paper they used a rainbow sheen plastic which gave the box some depth and shimmer. It is a simple plastic box.  It is fairly sturdy. I left the rainbow sheen plastic in and it looks nice. I’ll reuse it just as I will reuse all the other boxes, but from the massive hype they were giving the box I was expecting something more.  They really talked up their keepsake box. I know it isn’t a terribly expensive subscription but I would have thought maybe hinges on the lid. It is just a plastic version of their cardboard boxes. And while useful, not quite worth the hype they gave it.

I know I did a lot of complaining in this post, but at the end I received several products that I will use and that I wanted to try. The only real clunker for me was the scent of that hand sanitizer and while I don’t care for the scent I will still use it, just not in enclosed spaces.  To be honest the scent was so overpowering I didn’t have any thoughts about the moisturizing aspect of it, so I’ll have to try it in the garden and report back.  Other than that scent it was a good box.  I was annoyed by the items being sold out before I was allowed to choose and by the shampoo and conditioner counting as two items when there is only enough product for a one time paired usage. But otherwise I am actually pretty happy with January’s selection ad looking forward to February. I have signed up for a full year of Birchboxes and I believe my last one is in November so I will be getting this box through then. I plan to keep track of both my delights and frustrations to see if I will keep the box past November or finally let it go.
